Moss, A's down M's to avoid sweep
Jul 14, 2014 - 1:54 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Moss homered to back a solid outing from Sonny Gray, as the Oakland Athletics avoided a three-game sweep to the Seattle Marines following a 4-1 win on Sunday.Gray (10-3) tossed 7 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts.
Nick Punto also homered, while Craig Gentry and John Jaso each contributed an RBI in the win.
Seattle hasn't swept Oakland in at least three games since Aug. 1-3, 2011.
"It was a good series for us," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Our guys finished the first half pretty strong."
Mariners starter Chris Young (8-6) took the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits over six innings on the hill.
James Jones hit a one-out single in the first and advanced to third on a throwing error by Gray on a pickoff attempt. Robinson Cano plated the speedy Jones with a groundout to first.
Jed Lowrie doubled with one down in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Andy Parrino walked two batters later which preceded Gentry's two- out, RBI single to center. Jaso followed with an RBI single to help the A's take a 2-1 lead.
Moss blasted his 21st homer of the season with one out in the sixth and Punto whacked his second homer of the season to add some cushion in the ninth.
"It was a fastball middle-in," Moss said of his homer. "I was just looking for a pitch right in that zone."
Sean Doolittle, who came on in the eighth to get out of a two-out, first-and- second jam, recorded the final four outs to cap the first half with his 14th save of the season.
Game Notes
Oakland went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position ... Seattle has four All-Star participants for the first time since 2003 ... The A's end the first half with the best record in baseball, however, only lead the AL West by 1 1/2 games over the Los Angeles Angels.
