Hudson pitches Giants past Marlins

Jul 20, 2014 - 4:55 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Pablo Sandoval had three hits to stay hot and Tim Hudson tossed 7 1/3 stellar innings to help the San Francisco Giants top the Miami Marlins, 5-3, on Saturday to win their second straight game out of the All-Star break.

Sandoval finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Hunter Pence drove in two runs for the Giants, winners in three straight for the first time since a five-game streak from June 4-8. Sandoval has eight hits over his last three games.

Hudson (8-6) surrendered just a run on eight hits without a walk, ending a five-start winless streak.

"The last couple of games we've played better," said Hudson. "We've had some better at-bats, guys are hitting the ball and having some quality at-bats even when they're getting out. That's what it takes to win ball games."

Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez (6-5) surrendered two runs -- one earned -- on three hits in 2 2/3 innings before leaving with a shin contusion after taking a Joe Panik liner off his leg in the third inning. Sam Dyson labored through 3 1/3 innings in relief, allowing three runs to score on four hits and four walks.

Giancarlo Stanton homered for the second straight game following a 15-game homerless drought, but the Marlins fell for the sixth straight game.

"That's good, back-to-back homers. Hopefully that gets him going," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "We definitely need him. He's the guy, the catalyst for our offense."

The Marlins singled three times in the home first, with Casey McGehee's base knock to center plating Christian Yelich for an early 1-0 lead.

The Giants quickly erased their deficit, pushing a pair of runs across in the top of the second inning. Sandoval got things started with a double to left and two batters later, Brandon Belt tied it at 1-1 with a two-bagger to right. After Brandon Crawford popped up for the second out, a passed ball allowed Belt to move to third. Jarrod Saltalamacchia tracked down the ball and fired wide of third and into left field as Belt sprinted home.

Hudson helped himself in the top of the fourth, drawing a bases-loaded walk with two outs to force in San Francisco's third run. Hunter Pence followed with a two-run single to right.

Jeremy Affeldt ended the eighth after taking over for Hudson with one gone in the inning.

Sergio Romo served up Stanton's 23rd homer of the year to start the ninth. He retired the next two batters he faced before Marcell Ozuna doubled off the wall in right, prompting Giants manager Bruce Bochy to go to his bullpen for the final out.

Santiago Casilla came on and allowed Saltalamacchia's RBI single to center, but Adeiny Hechavarria popped to right to end the contest.

Game Notes

Stanton fell to 3-for-18 lifetime against Hudson ... The Marlins have scored just 16 runs over their last eight games (1-7) ...
