Pirates go for sweep of Rockies at PNC Park
Jul 20, 2014 - 12:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Locke takes a six-game unbeaten streak into Sunday afternoon's matchup against the Colorado Rockies when the Pittsburgh Pirates try to complete a three-game sweep at PNC Park. The lefty didn't get a decision July 11 at Cincinnati, where he gave up nine hits and three runs -- one earned -- over 6 1/3 innings. He hasn't lost since June 8 versus Milwaukee.
Locke has faced Colorado once. He was in line for the win, but had a no- decision on Aug. 11, 2013 at Coors Field after allowing two runs -- one earned -- in 5 2/3 frames.
Tyler Matzek will make his eighth career major league start for the Rockies this afternoon. The lefty, who is 0-4 over his last six appearances, is coming off a loss July 12 against Minnesota.
Last night, Jordy Mercer's RBI single in the 11th inning gave the Pirates a 3-2 win.
"He was really hot before the break, swinging the bat extremely well," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Mercer. "He's capable of driving in runs. He's getting more confident every time he takes the field."
Neil Walker finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Gaby Sanchez also drove in a run for the Pirates, who have won four of their last six.
Charlie Morton gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts over seven innings. Jared Hughes (5-2) got the win for pitching a scoreless 11th inning.
Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run home run for the Rockies, who have lost their past four. Starter Brett Anderson allowed a run on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Colorado All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left the game after suffering what the team said was a cramp in the tensor fascia latae of his left thigh while running out a groundout to end the third inning.
"It looked like he tweaked a high quad, hip flexor," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss, who added Tulowitzki was "day-to-day" as they wait to see how he feels.
The Pirates have won 11 of their last 13 home games. A win would give them a sweep over the Rockies for the first time at PNC Park.
