Mets rely on deGrom against Mariners

Jul 22, 2014 - 2:25 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom will try to win a third straight start on Tuesday night as the New York Mets look to even their three-game set with the hosting Seattle Mariners.

The right-handed deGrom has given up one run over 14 innings while winning back-to-back starts for the first time in his young career. The rookie last pitched on July 13 versus Miami, allowing a run over seven frames and striking out eight.

The 26-year-old deGrom is 3-5 with a 3.18 earned run average through 12 starts with 72 strikeouts in his 73 2/3 innings. He will face a club from the American League for the first time.

For the Mariners, Erasmo Ramirez was recalled to make his first major league start since June 24.

The right-hander is 1-4 with a 4.58 ERA in 11 starts with Seattle this season, but has not won since April 1. Ramirez went 2-4 with a 4.12 ERA in nine starts with Triple-A Tacoma.

Ramirez has never faced the Mets and the Mariners cleared a roster spot for the 24-year-old by sending first baseman Justin Smoak to Triple-A after last night's 5-2 win over the Mets.

Smoak is hitting just .208 on the season and went 0-for-3 versus New York. In fact, he was the lone starter to not get a hit in last night's win, with the rest of the lineup smacking 14 hits.

Mike Zunino hit a solo homer, Willie Bloomquist went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Kyle Seager added two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Dustin Ackley also put his stamp on the game with three hits, an RBI and a leaping catch at the wall in left field to take a homer away from New York's Travis d'Arnaud in the sixth inning.

Roenis Elias, meanwhile, struck out eight and allowed a run on five hits and two walks over 5 1/3 frames for Seattle, which had lost three of four coming in.

"He was outstanding and that was really good to see ... threw the ball really well." Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said of Elias.

Jonathon Niese surrendered four runs on 11 hits and two walks over six innings for the Mets, who have dropped three straight following an 8-1 stretch.

"My control was okay, my command wasn't," said Niese following his first start since July 4 because of shoulder inflammation. "I left too many balls over the plate, wasn't hitting the corners like I wanted to."

Seattle has won eight of 10 versus New York dating back to 2003 and is hosting the Mets for the first time since a three-game sweep from June 17-19, 2005.
