Petit steps in for Cain, as Giants resume set with Phils
Jul 22, 2014 - 2:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Yusmeiro Petit will once again step in for injured teammate Matt Cain as he gets the call for the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night in the second contest of a four-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.Cain was in line to start this contest, but was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday due to right elbow inflammation. It marks the hurler's third trip to the DL this season as he has also missed time due to a cut on his finger and a hamstring ailment.
However, with the issue now involving Cain's arm, it is unknown when he will be able to return.
"I'm not exactly sure, but I'm pretty optimistic that it shouldn't be too bad," Cain told San Francisco's website.
So, enter Petit, who is 3-3 with a 3.86 earned run average in 26 total appearances this season. That includes five games as a starter, but he is only 1-2 with a 5.81 ERA on that role.
The 29-year-old righty is 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA in five previous outings versus the Phillies, including one start.
The loss of Cain and first baseman Brandon Belt to the seven-day concussion DL caused some roster shuffling for the Giants on Monday that paid off in a 7-4 win over the Phillies, a victory that kept the club tied atop the NL West with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Adam Duvall, recalled to replace Belt, hit a two-run homer, while hurler George Kontos notched the win in relief after also being recalled on Monday.
Hunter Pence had three hits and drove in two runs in the Giants' fourth victory in five games, while starter Ryan Vogelsong yielded four runs -- three earned -- and 11 hits in just three-plus innings.
"It was a strange game for both starters," said San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy. "They both gave up a lot of hits. Our bullpen did a great job and really stepped up."
Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard each drove in a pair of runs for the Phillies, who have dropped five of their last six games.
Cliff Lee, who was activated from the 60-day disabled list before the game, allowed six runs on 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. His last start was on May 18 before landing on the DL with a left elbow strain.
"I wasn't locating that well," Lee said. "I was behind in the count more than I would like to be."
Philly will try to even this set tonight behind right-hander Roberto Hernandez, who put together his best start of the season back on July 9 in his final outing before the All-Star break.
Hernandez snapped a three-start skid by logging eight innings of one-run ball against the Milwaukee Brewers. He scattered one run, three hits and two walks in his longest start of the season, claiming just his second victory in his last nine decisions.
"It was impressive," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Hernandez's outing. "It looked like the ball was darting both ways."
Hernandez, 33, is 4-8 with a 4.22 ERA in 20 games this season, including 17 starts, and is 0-1 in two previous meetings with the Giants while posting a 5.06 ERA.
The Phils and Giants split six meetings a season ago.
