Sanchez tries to rebound in Arizona

Jul 23, 2014 - 2:57 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said it looked like starter Anibal Sanchez "hit a wall" after a good start to his first appearance following the All-Star break.

Sanchez will try to shake off a disappointing finish on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The right-hander lost for only the second time in his last eight decisions on Friday versus Cleveland. Sanchez started things off with six scoreless innings of three-hit ball, but gave up four runs in the seventh frame without recording an out. That left him 6-4 on the year with a 3.22 earned run average despite seven strikeouts.

"I think he just got tired," Ausmus said. "I don't know if it was the time off. (But) for whatever reason he looked like he got tired."

The 30-year-old Sanchez is 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA in six previous starts against Arizona, which sends out Trevor Cahill today hoping he can build off his last appearance.

Cahill returned to the Diamondbacks' rotation on Friday versus the Chicago Cubs following a demotion to the minors, making his first major league appearance since June 6 and first start since April 13.

It wasn't a great start by any stretch, but Cahill did give the Diamondbacks a chance to win, which they did as the righty took a no-decision for allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in five innings.

The outing moved Cahill to 1-6 with a 5.63 ERA in 20 games this season with five starts, while his ERA at home still sits at 7.27 ERA.

Manager Kirk Gibson noted that Cahill was good, but had trouble out of the stretch, while the 26-year-old himself noted that he "was definitely a little bit nervous."

Cahill has made five previous starts against Detroit, splitting four decisions with a 4.15 ERA.

The D-backs have a chance at a series victory after coming back to win Tuesday's meeting 5-4. Torii Hunter had put Detroit ahead by one with a two- run single in the top of the eighth, but Miguel Montero countered in the bottom of the frame with his own hit that chased home a pair of runners.

Montero's base hit came while down 0-2 in the count to Detroit reliever Ian Krol.

"I was thinking the third one I'm not going to strike out looking so I gotta be ready to swing," Montero said. "They battled, we battled, it was a really exciting game."

Aaron Hill homered and drove in three runs, while David Peralta tripled twice and scored three runs in Arizona's fourth victory in five games.

Rick Porcello was denied a MLB-leading 13th victory after giving up three runs on five hits over seven frames for Detroit, which took the opener of this three-game interleague series on Monday but has now lost five of seven.

"We don't like to lose any game," said Porcello. "It stings either way if were down by 10 or we lose by one."

The Tigers have taken two of three from the Diamondbacks in each of the last two meetings, taking place in 2010 and 2011 in Detroit. Arizona won two of three when the teams last squared off in Arizona back in 2008.
