Abreu's HR keys big 7th inning for ChiSox
Jul 30, 2014 - 5:30 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Abreu and Adam Dunn clubbed consecutive home runs to highlight a seven-run seventh inning, as the Chicago White Sox pounded the Detroit Tigers, 11-4, to start a three-game series at Comerica Park.Abreu, who finished with four RBI, hit a two-run homer, his major league- leading 31st of the season. The blast came after Alexei Ramirez stroked a three-run double, which was part of Chicago's 15-hit attack.
"Tonight, whether it was a base hit or a couple of miscues, you take advantage of it," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.
Jose Quintana (6-7) scattered nine hits and gave up a pair of runs to help the White Sox to their fourth win in five games. The lefty moved to 3-0 over his last eight starts. He hasn't lost since June 13 against Kansas City.
Anibal Sanchez (7-5) surrendered six hits and five runs -- four earned -- over 6 1/3 innings to lose his third straight home start.
Bryan Holaday drove in two runs for the AL Central leaders, who dropped their fourth consecutive contest. The Tigers are 4-9 in their last 13 games.
The game was tied 2-2 going to the seventh, but Chicago sent 12 men to the plate in the inning. Conor Gillaspie had two singles in the frame, including one that started the inning. Gordon Beckham reached safely on a fielding error by third baseman Miguel Cabrera. One out later, Tyler Flowers grounded a base hit to left field. The ball caromed off the glove of Rajai Davis for an error, allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Joakim Soria entered from the bullpen, but the veteran right-hander, in just his second game since being traded from Texas, gave up a four consecutive hits, starting with Adam Eaton's single. Ramirez then split the gap in right- center. Abreu homered to left, followed by Dunn's shot to right.
Soria recorded just one out and surrendered six hits in all in his home debut with the Tigers.
"It was probably the worst outing of my career," Soria said.
Abreu added a two-run double in the eighth before the Tigers countered in the bottom portion with two runs, one on a J.D. Martinez double-play groundout and another on Holaday's RBI single.
Martinez tripled to right field to drive in Torii Hunter in the second inning. Holaday was up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to left for a 2-0 Detroit lead.
The White Sox tied the game in the fourth when Gillaspie singled in Abreu, who extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a base hit to right leading off the frame. Beckham added a sacrifice fly to left.
