Road-weary Rangers resume series with White Sox

Aug 5, 2014 - 2:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Colby Lewis tries to string back-to-back wins together on Tuesday when the Texas Rangers continue a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Lewis snapped a three-start losing streak on Wednesday against New York, as he held the Yankees to a pair of runs and four hits over seven innings. He retired the final 13 batters he faced and improved to 7-8 to go along with a 5.98 ERA.

"He kept the ball down, changed speeds, moved it around and made adjustments as he went along," manager Ron Washington said. "His mind is working again along with his body."

Lewis, who missed 1 1/2 years because of his physical ailments, is 1-2 but has pitched to a 3.44 ERA in three starts since the All-Star break, while opponents are hitting .235 off him. He had a 6.54 ERA before the All-Star break with opponents hitting .353 off him.

Chicago, meanwhile, will turn to left-hander John Danks, who is unbeaten over his last seven starts, but hasn't been particularly sharp of late. Danks did not get a decision on Thursday in Detroit, as he allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings of his team's 7-4 win.

"I don't feel like I did my part as much as obviously the other guys. But we won the game," said Danks, who is 9-6 on the year with a 4.50 ERA. "Certainly frustrating, but at the end of the day, we got the win. It's not an individual game. It's really not."

Over his last three starts Danks has given up 15 runs in 16 1/3 innings.

On Monday, Tyler Flowers finished a double shy of the cycle and drove in three runs as the White Sox earned a 5-3 win over the Rangers in a rain-shortened series opener.

The game was played through a persistent rain until finally being called after the top of the seventh inning.

Hector Noesi (6-8) went all seven frames and earned his first career complete game against his former team, which waived him back in April.

Nick Martinez (1-8) remained winless since May after allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks over five-plus innings.

"The rain didn't affect me at all," Martinez said. "This is a game of adversity. You have to be able to deal with adversity to pitch at this level."

The Rangers, who have lost seven in a row on the road, took two of three from the White Sox earlier in the year in Arlington, but have lost eight of their last nine at U.S. Cellular Field.
