King Felix, Price square off in Detroit
Aug 16, 2014 - 2:32 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Two of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball will square off Saturday as the Seattle Mariners take on the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a three-leg series at Comerica Park.Felix Hernandez, who entered the weekend with the American League's best earned run average, will battle head-to-head with David Price.
Hernandez sports a 13-3 overall record with a 1.95 ERA. He adds 194 strikeouts to just 32 walks surrendered this season. Hernandez, who hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last 10 starts, will try to extend his two- game winning streak on the mound.
King Felix helped take down the Blue Jays on Monday after lasting seven innings. Hernandez gave up one run on three hits and struck out eight batters en route to Seattle's 11-1 triumph over Toronto. Hernandez has lasted at least seven innings in each of his last 10 starts.
"It was a key game right there," Hernandez said after his latest outing. "We're finding something. We fight and do the little things."
In his career versus Detroit, Hernandez is 9-2 in 13 starts with a 2.51 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. On the road, Hernandez has earned a 4-1 record in 12 starts this season.
But Price is no pushover, either. The Tigers send out the AL leader in strikeouts who spent much of this season with the Rays. Price takes the mound with an 11-8 record, a 3.21 ERA and 205 strikeouts to 26 walks.
In two starts with his new ballclub, Price hasn't earned a decision. He's also played twice on the road and hasn't taken the field at Comerica yet. His last outing at Toronto ended after six innings, in which he allowed five hits and four earned runs. The Tigers dropped the contest, 6-5.
In three career starts against the Mariners, Price is 1-1 with a solid 3.00 ERA and an even more impressive 0.83 WHIP.
Seattle was all over Detroit on Friday night, as the Mariners took the first game of the series by a 7-2 margin. The scoring started early for the Mariners, and by the time the Tigers finally got on the board with a run, Seattle already had a 4-0 advantage.
Detroit is 1 1/2 games out of first place in the AL Central and fell a half- game behind the Mariners for the league's second wild card spot.
"Obviously we'd rather be in first place by 15 games, but we're not," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "There's nothing we can do about what we've done up until now. You just go out tomorrow and try to start winning games again."
Logan Morrison got Seattle's scoring started in the second inning with a single to center field that plated Kyle Seager. Endy Chavez got in on the scoring action with an RBI single, and Austin Jackson took advantage of his former team by grounding into a double play that ultimately scored Morrison for the 3-0 margin.
Robinson Cano tied the team lead with two hits on the night - one being a solo homer in the third inning for his 67th RBI this season. It was his 11th dinger on the year.
James Paxton maintained his unblemished record by picking up the victory to move to 3-0. He lasted six innings and gave up five hits, an earned run and struck out two. Rick Porcello was tagged with the loss after surrendering 10 hits, six runs (five earned) with three punch outs in six innings of work.
Seattle has now taken three of four matchups between the sides this season. The Mariners have won five straight games and nine of their last 10 overall.
