Mariners blank Rangers
Aug 27, 2014 - 6:39 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Endy Chavez drove in two runs while James Paxton and Danny Farquhar combined for a four-hit shutout as the Seattle Mariners grabbed a 5-0 win over the Texas Rangers in the second of a three- game set.Paxton gave (4-1) gave up four hits and three walks while striking out four in 6 2/3 innings the Mariners, who have won four of their last five. Farquhar allowed just one walk in the final 2 1/3 frames.
"You could see him getting stronger as the game went on," said Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon about Paxton. "I wanted to give him as much work as I could because he's not all the way back, but he's getting there."
Nick Martinez (3-10) allowed all five runs on six hits with four walks in five innings for the Rangers, who had won their previous two coming in. Adrian Beltre had two hits in the loss.
"He just didn't command the baseball the way he had been earlier," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Martinez.
Cano's 12th home run of the season in the first gave Seattle a 1-0 lead, and the Mariners made it a 2-0 game in the second on an RBI groundout from Jesus Sucre.
In the fourth, the Mariners padded their advantage. Logan Morrison walked and Chris Taylor singled before Chavez followed with a double to chase them both home, but was thrown out at third on the play. Austin Jackson tripled two batters later, and scored on a Dustin Ackley single for a 5-0 advantage.
Paxton left men on first and third in the third inning, then stranded two more runners in the fifth.
Following a 1-2-3 sixth, Paxton was pulled with two outs and a man on in the seventh for Farquhar, who got Rougned Odor to fly out and end the inning.
Farquhar pitched a flawless eighth, then worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to nail down the shutout.

Seattle has won just six of the 14 games with Texas this season ... Texas stranded seven and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position ... Martinez is 0-2 against Seattle this season.
