Hudson gets nod for Giants versus Rockies
Aug 27, 2014 - 2:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Tim Hudson tries to follow up Madison Bumgarner's gem on Wednesday when the San Francisco Giants continue a four-game series with the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park.Bumgarner took a perfect game into the eighth inning and struck out a career- high 13 in a one-hit shutout, while Buster Posey homered twice to help San Francisco snap a three-game slide in a 3-0 win on Tuesday.
"That game was more impressive than a lot of no-hitters, that's how well he threw tonight," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "You look at the strikeouts, the stuff he had, the command."
Bumgarner (15-9) faced the minimum through seven innings, but a 1-2 breaking ball to Justin Morneau leading off the eighth was poked down the right field line for a double. Pitching out of the stretch for the first time all game, the southpaw responded by striking out the next three batters.
Posey, who nearly became the second player in MLB history to catch two perfect games, produced the game's lone runs with his two-run homer in the sixth inning and a solo blast in the eighth. Posey caught Matt Cain's perfect game against Houston on June 13, 2012.
Jorge De La Rosa (13-9) left the game immediately after serving up Posey's first home run with a left thumb contusion. Colorado's starter went five-plus innings and struck out five.
"He was throwing the ball really well," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "Hurt the hand during his at-bat. I don't have any major concerns right now. We've seen this before with his thumb. Hopefully it's just a bruised thumb and he'll be fine."
Now the Giants turn to Hudson, who won for the first time in six starts on Friday in Washington. Hudson gave up two runs (1 earned) and five hits in 5 1/3 innings of that one to even his record at 9-9, while lowering his ERA to 2.99.
Hudson has faced the Rockies 13 times and is 5-2 against them with a 4.35 ERA.
Colorado, meanwhile, goes with lefty Franklin Morales, who has lost his last three decisions. Morales lost to Miami on Friday, as the Marlins tagged him for six runs and eight hits in just four innings to fall to 5-7 to go along with a 5.32 ERA.
"They played a good team game," Morales said. "What I tried to do was make my pitches and tried to get a ground ball, but sometimes I missed my pitches and they hit the ball up."
Morales is 1-3 in 20 games (5 starts) versus the Giants with a 5.75 ERA.
Colorado is 8-5 against San Francisco this season.
