Mets target more success vs. rival Phillies

Aug 30, 2014 - 12:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets shoot for another series win over the NL East-rival Philadelphia Phillies when the two clubs resume a three-game set Saturday at Citi Field.

The Mets posted a 4-1 win in Friday's series opener and took the lead for good on Phillies left-fielder Grady Sizemore's fielding error in the seventh inning. Wilmer Flores and Matt den Dekker came around to score when Sizemore dropped a pop up by Juan Lagares.

New York tacked on another run in the frame when Eric Campbell stole home with two out. Jacob deGrom collected the win and allowed one unearned run in seven innings, while Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless eighth and Jenrry Mejia posted three strikeouts in the ninth for his 20th save.

"I try to switch up things with guys every time they're at the plate," said deGrom. "If you can do that then they don't know what to expect when they come up against you."

The Mets ended a two-game slide and won for just the fourth time in the last 11 tries. They haven't won a series since taking three of four games in Philadelphia from Aug. 8-11.

The Mets will send Bartolo Colon to the mound Saturday and he is 12-10 with a 3.82 ERA. Colon, the subject of recent trade rumors, has won four of his last six starts, including Sunday's 11-3 win at Los Angeles in which the right- hander limited the Dodgers to a pair of runs in six innings.

Colon is 5-6 in 11 home starts and 4-2 with a 3.35 ERA in eight career games against the Phillies. Colon has beaten the Phillies three times already this season.

Philadelphia had won four in a row and six of seven games until last night's loss in the opener of a nine-game road trip against the Mets, Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.

Sizemore's blunder in the field was a costly one.

"I just happened to be the guy who let the team down, that's all there really is to it," said Sizemore.

Chase Utley had two of the Phillies' five hits and Cody Asche drove in the lone run. The Phillies have lost three straight and seven of eight road games, and are 28-35 as the visitor.

Jerome Williams will make his fourth start in a Phillies uniform Saturday and is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in his first three appearances with the team. Williams had his best outing in red pinstripes on Sunday against St. Louis, as he tossed eight strong innings and allowed one run in a 7-1 victory.

Williams has allowed only a run in each of his past two outings and will face the Mets for the fourth time in his career. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA in three starts in this series.

New York has dominated the Phillies this season to the tune of a 12-5 record and has won nine of the past 11 games in this rivalry.
