Yankees unleash McCarthy on Blue Jays
Aug 31, 2014 - 1:25 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon McCarthy tries to bounce back from his worst start as a member of the New York Yankees on Sunday when they play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre,McCarthy tossed a four-hit shutout two starts ago, but was tagged in Detroit to the tune of five runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings on Tuesday, dropping him to 5-3 with the Yanks to go along with a 2.47 ERA.
"I've thrown well enough to get through outings where I haven't been as sharp, and today, that's the disappointment," McCarthy said. "I'd like to be able to fight back. You know days like this you're going to give up some runs, especially against a good team like that. You'd like to be able to limit it a little bit more."
In 10 games (7 starts) versus the Blue Jays, McCarthy is 3-3 with a 3.83 ERA.
Toronto, meanwhile, will counter with lefty J.A. Happ, who is 0-3 over his last five starts and 8-8 on the year with a 4.40 ERA. Happ did not get a decision on Monday against Boston, as he allowed three runs and five hits in six innings of a 4-3 loss.
Happ has tossed at least six innings in three of his last four outings, but he has one win since the All-Star break mostly because his team has scored three runs or less in five of those eight outings.
"It's definitely tough to take," Happ said. "I felt better than that. They put some good swings on a couple of balls but other than that I felt like I was executing pretty well."
Happ is 2-2 in eight starts against the Yankees with a 5.00 ERA.
Toronto evened this series at a game apiece on Saturday, as Jose Bautista's first-inning homer stood up and Drew Hutchison and Aaron Sanchez combined on a one-hit shutout to lift the Blue Jays to a 2-0 victory.
Hutchison (9-11) surrendered only a fourth-inning double to Mark Teixeira, walked two and hit a pair of batters. He also struck out nine before Sanchez retired all six men he faced to notch his first big league save.
"It seemed like his fastball was getting on our hitters a lot quicker than they thought," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Hutchison. "He threw the ball really well."
The Jays bounced back from Friday's 6-3 loss in the series opener and won for only the second time in their last six games.
Michael Pineda (3-3) pitched six-plus solid innings for New York in the hard- luck loss. He allowed seven hits and both runs, and struck out three without issuing a walk.
New York fell to 3-3 on a seven-game road trip that ends Sunday.
"Everyone else has to step up," added Girardi.
New York will likely again be without outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who injured his ankle in Friday's win. Ellsbury is batting .455 with four homers and 11 RBI in his last 11 games.
New York is 8-6 against the Blue Jays this season.
