Giants go at it again with Rockies
Sep 2, 2014 - 2:45 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - What gives in first, the hot hitter or the hot pitcher? The streaking San Francisco Giants will try to reverse the result of that question on Tuesday night, when they visit Coors Field and meet right-hander Jordan Lyles and the Colorado Rockies.
The Giants got a split, for practical purposes, on the opening day of the series on Monday, winning the resumption of a suspended game before dropping the regularly scheduled contest.
The loss ended a six-game win streak.
"Hard-fought game, tough game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Even with the defeat, San Francisco got continued offensive production from Hunter Pence, who's hit .393 in a 14-game hit streak and leads the National League with 166 hits; and Buster Posey, who's got five home runs and 14 runs batted in across his last 11 games.
Nonetheless, the pair was hitless against Lyles on Thursday at San Francisco, where the Colorado hurler allowed just four hits in six innings, but still took a tough-luck 4-1 loss.
Ironically, it was Lyles' double in the third inning that stopped the retired batters streak of San Francisco's Yusmeiro Petit at 46. He'd established the major league record by retiring the batter before Lyles.
Petit will again start for the Giants in place of Tim Lincecum. He made six of the appearances during the streak in relief, but allowed just one run in six innings against the Rockies to earn another starting assignment.
In his last 16 games, he's walked four batters and struck out 48 in 37 1/3 innings.
Colorado rapped 15 hits in winning Monday's full game and at least temporarily halted an offensive skid that had yielded a .144 batting average in six games.
"The hits were coming from a lot of guys you may not expect it from," Colorado's Charlie Blackmon said. "It's really positive to see that kind of contribution from not the usual suspects."
San Francisco's Michael Morse is questionable to play Tuesday after he was injured during batting practice on Monday, experiencing pain in his left side.
On Monday, Blackmon's single in the ninth lifted the Rockies to a 10-9 win over San Francisco. After LaTroy Hawkins blew his second save of the season in the away ninth, Michael McKenry singled up the middle off Sergio Romo (5-4) to lead off the home half, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Rutledge and advanced to third on Rafael Ynoa's infield single with two outs.
Blackmon stepped in and served the first pitch he saw into right to win the game.
Ben Paulsen homered in the win, while Blackmon, Rutledge and DJ LaMahieu each had two RBI.
The two teams concluded a suspended game from May 22 prior to the regularly scheduled matchup, with Pence's double highlighting a two-run eighth as the Giants grabbed a 4-2 win.
Pence, who homered in the setback, and Brandon Crawford each had three RBI. Gregor Blanco, Posey and Pablo Sandoval had an RBI apiece for the Giants.
