Bonds hits No. 762 as Giants beat Rockies
Sep 6, 2007 - 4:46 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- Barry Bonds added to his all-time record, but got plenty of help from his teammates.Bonds, Pedro Feliz and Bengie Molina all homered as the San Francisco Giants snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 triumph over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.
Giants starter Kevin Correia (4-6) limited the Rockies to one run and four hits over six innings in his second start after replacing the injured Russ Ortiz, who was placed on the disabled list on August 21 with a right torn flexor tendon in his elbow. Correia struck out four without walking a batter as the Giants salvaged the final game of the three-game series.
"Kevin has been throwing the ball well since he has been in the rotation," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He is comfortable there and pitching like he wants to stay there. He did a great job and it all started with him tonight."
Bonds began the home run parade in the first inning, hitting his 762nd career home run off Rockies rookie starter Ubaldo Jimenez, giving the Giants a 2-0 lead. The two-run blast was his 28th of the season as Jimenez became the 449th pitcher to surrender a homer to the all-time leader. The home run was Bonds' first since August 24 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
"I didn't know if it was going out," Bonds said. "But it just made it." "That kid throws 99 and for Barry to have the bat speed to get around on that pitch at 43 says a lot," Bochy said. "He (Jimenez) managed to get out of some jams we had him in. He is going to be a good one."
Feliz extended the San Francisco lead to 3-0 in the fourth, hammering a solo home run, his 18th of the season, to center field on a 98-mile per hour fastball from Jimenez.
Molina followed suit in the sixth, greeting reliever Jorge Julio by crushing a belt-high fastball into the left field seats for his 16th home run of the season.
"He is so solid," Bochy said. "He is so good on both sides of the ball and does so well with our staff. He can hit the long ball. He takes pride in what he does behind the plate and has really been a pleasure to manage."
Jimenez (3-3), who was 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in his last four starts, pitched well, but couldn't avoid the longball, allowing all three of his runs on home runs. The righthander surrendered seven hits over five innings while striking out two and walking two.
Correia faced just eight batters in the first two innings before retiring six straight over the third and the fourth. He allowed a single to rookie Troy Tulowitzki in the fifth before getting Yorvit Torrealba to ground out to third and striking out rookie pinch hitter Joe Koshansky to end the frame before the Rockies built momentum.
"I was able to put my fastball where I wanted tonight," Correia said. "I was behind some batters tonight but it wasn't a problem because I was able to come back and get that strike when I needed it. My fastball definitely helped me out tonight."
Correia allowed his only run in the sixth inning, when Matt Holliday plated Kaz Matsui with a single to left, narrowing the lead to three.
The Rockies made it interesting in the ninth inning when Tulowitzki hit a two-run single to center to narrow the lead to two. But, Brad Hennessey got rookie Ian Stewart and Cory Sullivan to fly out to end the game.
