Padres open road trip at Coors Field

Sep 5, 2014 - 3:04 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres will spend some time outside their comfortable surroundings when they begin a nine-game road trip Friday with the first of three straight games against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

The Padres will play teams from the NL West on this junket, including Los Angeles and Arizona, and went 6-4 on a recent stay at Petco Park. They wrapped up the homestand with Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks, as Randall Delgado tossed five scoreless innings in his first start since April to lead Arizona.

Former Diamondback Ian Kennedy surrendered four runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings to absorb the loss. Kennedy dropped to 2-2 in five starts against his former team and the Padres produced just four hits in their second straight loss since winning six of the previous seven games.

"Ian's stuff was fine," Padres manager Bud Black said. "They punched some hits together. We just couldn't hit."

Black's club will try to get the bats going with Eric Stults set to take the mound Friday and he is just 6-15 with a 4.56 earned run average. Stults has dropped back-to-back trips to the mound and is only 2-4 in his previous six decisions. In a 7-1 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday, Stults pitched well in defeat and allowed two runs in six innings.

Stults is only 2-9 in 15 road assignments, but has a 3-1 record to go along with a 3.94 ERA in 14 career meetings (10 starts) with the Rockies. The lefty is 0-1 in three starts against them this season.

Colorado has alternated wins and losses over its last six games and recently won two of three matchups with San Francisco, including Wednesday's 9-2 shellacking of the Giants.

Corey Dickerson homered twice, while Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer and Michael McKenry also went deep for the Rockies.

"I just feel like I'm getting my normal at-bats, just putting good swings on the ball," Dickerson said.

Rockies starter Christian Bergman gave up two runs in six innings for the win. Tyler Matzek looks to keep the Rockies rolling when he takes the ball Friday and is 4-9 with a 4.75 earned run average. Matzek has prevailed in two straight trips to the mound after losing his previous five, and threw seven shutout innings in Saturday's 2-0 win at Arizona.

Matzek, a left-hander, is 2-4 in six starts in the Rocky Mountains this season and has lost both of his career starts against the Padres, charged with 10 runs and 16 hits across 12 innings (7.50 ERA).

San Diego has a slim 7-6 edge on Colorado in the season series. The Padres swept a three-game series from the Rockies from Aug. 11-13 at Petco Park.
