Tigers, Giants counter ace with ace in Detroit

Sep 6, 2014 - 11:49 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of aces will toe the rubber on Saturday afternoon in Detroit, where the Tigers play host to the San Francisco Giants for the second contest of a three-game series between contending clubs.

The Tigers, who fell out of a playoff spot with a loss in last night's opener, turn to their big trade deadline pickup in David Price, while the Giants send 16-game winner Madison Bumgarner to the hill.

Price will make his seventh start with Detroit since being acquired from Tampa Bay. He is 2-2 with a 3.86 earned run average in six starts with Detroit and snapped a two-start skid last time out.

Price beat Cleveland 12-1 on Monday, scattering a run on eight hits and two walks over seven innings. The lefty added eight strikeouts and leads the American League with 232.

Price did not factor into his only other start versus San Francisco despite nine innings of one-run ball.

Bumgarner, meanwhile, has won three straight starts, following up a one-hit, 13-strikeout shutout over Colorado by holding Milwaukee to a run over six innings on Sunday. The left-hander struck out seven to improve to 16-9 with a 2.97 ERA on the year.

Bumgarner, who has not lost since Aug. 8 and is tied for second in the National League in wins, has faced Detroit only once before in the regular season and gave up one run over 7 1/3 innings of a no-decision.

It will be a quick turnaround today for these two clubs following last night's 8-2 victory for the Giants, a game that was delayed for two hours and 42 minutes following the third inning.

San Francisco had already built a 6-0 lead before the rain came and did not slow down when play resumed to win for the eighth time in 10 games. The Giants, owners of the first wild card spot in the National League, sit two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West.

"With a nice lead going into the fourth inning, that's the last thing you want to see, is it get called and have to play it again," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Jake Peavy still managed to go six innings, charged with two unearned runs in the victory, while Pablo Sandoval homered and Brandon Crawford had three hits with an RBI.

Rick Porcello surrendered six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits and a walk over three frames for Detroit, which is two games behind AL Central-leading Kansas City. The Tigers also fell a half-game behind Seattle for the AL's second wild-card spot.

"It was a combination of some good pitches that got hit and some bad pitches that got hit, and they capitalized on all of them," Porcello said.

The is the Giants first visit to Comerica Park since sweeping the Tigers in the 2012 World Series.
