Miller aims to stay hot versus Rockies
Sep 13, 2014 - 1:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Not only does Shelby Miller carry a 14-inning scoreless streak into Saturday's game for St. Louis. The Cardinals right-hander hasn't lost in a over a month.Miller gets a chance to set a personal best when the NL Central-leading Cardinals resume their three-game set against the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium. Miller is two outs shy of his career-long shutout streak. He is 1-0 over his last five starts and hasn't suffered a defeat since Aug. 11 at Miami.
Miller is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two career starts versus the Rockies.
Up until his last start, Franklin Morales had gone two months without a victory. The lefty, who toes the rubber tonight for the Rockies, threw six shutout innings against San Diego on Sunday. That marked his first victory since July 8, also versus the Padres. In fact, all 6 of his wins this season have come against the NL West.
The last road victory for Morales came May 25 at Atlanta. He's faced the Cardinals twice, both in relief and has given up three earned runs in two innings.
Last night, Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer to back eight strong innings from Adam Wainwright in a 5-1 Cardinals win. Wainwright (18-9) gave up one run on six hits while striking out eight for the Cardinals, who remained 2 1/2 games ahead of Pittsburgh for first place in the NL Central. Wainwright was coming off his fourth complete game of the season in Sunday's 9-1 pounding of the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
"Whether we hit a lull or Cincinnati pitched well, we didn't have the same intensity there that we had in Milwaukee," said Holliday, referring to the Cardinals winning three of four games last weekend over the Brewers.
The right-hander has won three straight starts and is tied with Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto and Clayton Kershaw for the most wins in baseball.
Nolan Arenado drove in the lone run for the Rockies, who have lost four in a row. Jorge De La Rosa (13-11) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six innings.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Matt Carpenter walked and Randal Grichuk reached on an infield single prior to Holliday's blast to left.
"Jorge made one mistake. Mistakes tend to go far with that guy," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.
St. Louis won two of three games at Coors Field in late June.
