Dodgers try to rebound in rubber match with Rockies
Sep 17, 2014 - 2:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers cannot afford to lose any more ground in the NL West and will try to rebound Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers had a three-game winning streak halted in Tuesday's 10-4 pounding by the Rockies and saw their lead atop the division drop to three games over the San Francisco Giants. The Giants defeated Arizona on Tuesday.
Dan Haren didn't help the cause by allowing five runs in five innings of work.
"I thought he hung in there," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Haren.
Justin Turner had three hits and two RBI, and Yasiel Puig drove in a pair of runs. Puig, Haren, Dee Gordon, Matt Kemp and Scott Van Slyke had two hits apiece for Los Angeles, which entered the second portion of this series winners in eight of its last 11 games.
Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez may not play Wednesday because of a right elbow strain. He is batting .277 with 13 homers and 69 RBI.
Carlos Frias has appeared in 11 games (1 start) and the right-hander will take the mound Wednesday. Frias threw three innings of relief in Friday's 9-0 loss at San Francisco and has never faced the Rockies.
Colorado ended a seven-game losing streak with Tuesday's breakout performance, as Corey Dickerson hit a two-run homer and finished with four RBI. Justin Morneau and Michael McKenry had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Rockies.
Rockies starter Tyler Matzek allowed two runs on 11 hits while striking out six over 5 1/3 innings for the win.
"He had a good tempo, he's been really battling those last few starts," Dickerson said of Matzek.
Jorge De La Rosa hopes to pitch the Rockies to a series triumph when he takes the mound Wednesday. De La Rosa is winless (0-3) in his last four starts and gave up four runs -- three earned on a Matt Holliday homer in the first inning -- over six innings of a 5-1 loss at St. Louis on Friday.
The Rockies are 3-6 in De La Rosa's last nine starts and the left-hander has pitched well at Coors Field, going 9-2 in 14 starts there this season. He has won his last six decisions at home.
In 20 career meetings (16 starts) with Los Angeles, De La Rosa is 4-10 with a 6.04 ERA.
Los Angeles is 10-5 against Colorado this season.
