Giants resume set with Padres

Sep 26, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants secured a postseason spot on Thursday. They'll now focus on making sure that National League wild card game will be played at AT&T Park.

The Giants hope to take a step in that direction on Friday when they continue a four-game home set with the San Diego Padres.

San Francisco was assured of its third playoff appearance in the last five years before even taking the field on Thursday when Milwaukee was eliminated with a loss to Cincinnati.

The Giants then took care of business on the field Thursday in the opener against the Padres, as Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-3 with four RBI in San Francisco's 9-8 win.

Yasmani Grandal hit a go-ahead gram slam in the seventh inning, but the Giants responded with three runs in the bottom half to retake the lead.

Brandon Belt, who along with Brandon Crawford hit solo home runs, knocked in the tying run with a base hit before Hunter Pence scored on a suicide squeeze.

It was just the second win in the last seven games for the playoff-bound Giants, who still trail the Pittsburgh Pirates by one game for the top wild card spot in the NL.

Getting the call for the Giants on Friday will be righty Ryan Vogelsong, who has lost his last three decisions. Vogelsong lost to the Padres on Sunday, as he surrendered four runs (2 earned) and four hits in five innings to fall to 8-12 on the year to go along with a 3.96 ERA.

Vogelsong has faced the Friars 17 times (9 starts) and is 4-5 with a 5.46 ERA.

San Diego, meanwhile, will counter with righty Ian Kennedy, who is 12-13 on the year with a 3.76 ERA. Kennedy won his second straight start on Sunday against Vogelsong and the Giants, as he limited them to a pair of runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Kennedy is 8-4 lifetime versus the Giants with a 2.66 ERA in 19 starts.

San Diego has won nine of its 16 matchups with the Padres this season.
