Dodgers aim to close season with sweep of Rockies

Sep 28, 2014 - 1:36 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The NL West-champion Los Angeles Dodgers will try to stay hot before the postseason commences when they close out a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies Sunday at Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers set themselves up for a sweep of the Rockies with Saturday's 6-5 win in 12 innings, as Scott Van Slyke scored on a Franklin Morales wild pitch with one out. Van Slyke was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Adrian Gonzalez hit a home run in the win.

Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon left the game after the first inning with right hip irritation.

"It's something he had before in Colorado," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Nothing major. We'll get an MRI to make sure."

Dan Haren started the first five innings and allowed two runs. Carlos Frias picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief and five K's.

Los Angeles has won four straight and 10 of its last 14 games, and will send Zack Greinke to the mound Sunday. With the playoffs slated to start in a few days, the Dodgers are hoping Greinke can continue his recent solid pitching. Greinke is 4-0 over his last seven starts and defeated San Francisco in Tuesday's 4-2 victory with eight innings of two-run ball.

The right-handed Greinke is 9-2 in 14 starts at Dodger Stadium and 5-2 with a 3.65 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) lifetime against Colorado. Greinke is 2-0 in three starts against the Rockies this season.

Colorado will miss the postseason for a fifth straight year and manager Walt Weiss's job status could be in jeopardy.

The Rockies were plagued by injuries and lost for the fourth time in five tries on Saturday. Michael McKenry and Ben Paulsen both homered, while Charlie Blackmon, Rafael Ynoa, Kyle Parker, Charlie Culberson and McKenry ended with two hits apiece.

Morales absorbed the loss and Rockies starting pitcher Eddie Butler was touched for five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Colorado relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins made his 1,000th career appearance.

"Eddie looked sharp early, but it got away from him in the fifth," Weiss said. "I'm very happy for LaTroy to hand the ball off to him for his 1,000th game. He's in select company."

Weiss rested first baseman Justin Morneau, who leads the National League with a .319 batting average.

Christian Bergman will put a cap on the season for the Rockies Sunday and is 3-4 with a 5.29 earned run average. Bergman ended a personal two-game slide in last Sunday's 8-3 win over Arizona and gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Bergman is 3-2 in his past five decisions and the rookie right-hander lost to the Dodgers on Sept. 15 in an 11-3 defeat, as he permitted six runs and nine hits in five innings of work.

Los Angeles is 12-6 against the Rockies this season.
