Moore provides key hit as Orioles top Blue Jays

Sep 17, 2007 - 12:03 AM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Wins have been few and far between for the Baltimore Orioles recently.

Scott Moore's RBI single highlighted a two-run 12th inning that gave the Orioles an 8-6 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

Nick Markakis hit his 20th home run and collected his 100th RBI of the season for the Orioles, who won for just the sixth time in their last 25 games.

"It definitely was a long day, but our pitchers did a good job and we got the hits when it counted," Markakis said.

With the game knotted 6-6, Aubrey Huff opened the Baltimore 12th with a single and advanced to third base on Freddie Bynum's ground-rule double off reliever Jason Frasor.

After Paul Bako struck out, Moore singled home Huff and moved Bynum to third. Brian Roberts followed with a sacrifice fly to give Baltimore an 8-6 edge.

"We had a chance to win that game and my job was to get that guy in," said Moore, whose go-ahead hit bounced off the glove of Toronto first baseman Matt Stairs.

Baltimore reliever Rob Bell (4-3) picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings and Fernando Cabrera tossed a perfect 12th to record the first save of his career.

"We felt like we got the most out of everybody today and contributions from a lot of different guys," Baltimore manager Dave Trembley said.

In addition to the two decisive runs, Frasor (1-5) allowed three hits and did not walk a batter while striking out one in 1 2/3 innings.

Toronto gained the upperhand early as Adam Lind and Russ Adams hit back-to-back homers on consecutive pitches to give Toronto a 3-1 edge in the second inning.

"It was nice to get the lead at the beginning of the game, but it was a long game and it sucks to lose," Lind said.

Baltimore fell behind 4-1, but chipped away at the lead and eventually tied the game in the seventh as Miguel Tejada, who had been 0-for-11 in the series, delivered a two-out RBI single.

The Orioles then took a 6-4 lead in the eighth on a two-out, two-run single by Tike Redman, but the two-run edge didn't last.

The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and, despite failing to come through with a clutch hit again, the team managed to tie the game with run-scoring groundouts by Alex Rios and Lyle Overbay.

Acquired from Cincinnati on September 7, Baltimore starter Victor Santos struggled for the second time in as many starts. The righthander allowed four runs, seven hits and three walks while striking out two in 4 1/3 innings. In his debut with the Orioles on Tuesday, the 30-year-old journeyman allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Toronto starter Shaun Marcum allowed three runs, five hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings.

"I would have liked to have stayed in, but I don't make those decisions," said Marcum, who threw 88 pitches. "You've got to respect what the manager (John Gibbons) does."
