Mariners, Rangers playing for pride
Sep 28, 2007 - 1:37 PM Texas (75-84) at Seattle (85-74) ,10:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Two teams playing only for pride will face off on Friday when the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers open a three-game series.
The Mariners, who contended for a playoff for a majority of the season, have to be happy with their performance this season, after finishing 2006 with a 78-84 record.
Jeff Weaver (7-13, 6.30 ERA) will try to end his season on a high note when he takes the mound for Seattle on Friday.
Weaver, who signed a one-year contract with Seattle at the beginning of the season, allowed five runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings during his last start on Sunday. The veteran righthander struck out two and walked two as the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim handed the Mariners a 7-4 setback.
Despite the loss, Weaver has won five of his last eight decisions.
The Rangers will counter with Edinson Volquez (2-1, 4.40), who surrendered five runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, but did not factor into the decision, as the Rangers were downed by the Baltimore Orioles, 11-9, on Saturday.
