Diamondbacks halt Padres' winning streak
Apr 14, 2015 - 5:36 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ender Inciarte doubled twice, scored twice, tripled and drove in four runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks past the San Diego Padres 8-4 in the opener of a three-game series. The Diamondbacks pounded out 12 hits to back a quality start from Rubby De La Rosa (2-0), who lasted six innings and limited the Padres to three runs.
Arizona was coming off a series win against the Dodgers over the weekend, while San Diego came in on a three-game winning streak.
Andrew Cashner (0-2) struck out nine over six innings but was done in by a Yangervis Solarte error that pushed across four unearned runs. He scattered seven hits and a walk.
"Overall his stuff was fine," Padres manager Bud Black said of his starter.
Solarte drove in two runs, and Yonder Alonso belted a solo homer in the loss.
Arizona's first four runs came in the second frame after Solarte threw away a ball on a routine grounder hit by Tuffy Gosewisch. The error scored a run and left runners on second and third, and after De La Rosa went down swinging for the second out, Inciarte doubled off the wall in left to plate two more.
Chris Owings followed with an RBI single, and the Diamondbacks stayed in front despite the Padres slowly chipping away at the deficit.
Alonso got a run back in the second with his first home run of the season, and Solarte began making up for his error with an RBI double in the third.
Cashner was thrown out making a wide turn at second prior to Solarte's double, then failed to get a critical bunt down in the fifth. His eventual strikeout kept runners on first and second, insuring Solarte's broken-bat single of only scoring one run.
Paul Goldschmidt added an RBI groundout in the seventh to give Arizona a 5-3 lead, and the visitors struck for three more insurance runs an inning later against Shawn Kelley. Jake Lamb doubled and scored on a Gosewisch single, and Inciarte tripled home Gosewisch and A.J. Pollock
Matt Kemp's RBI single in the home eighth accounted for the final margin.
Game Notes
Arizona opened the season with a 3-3 homestand against the Giants and Dodgers ... Cashner has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 19 consecutive starts at Petco Park ... Wil Myers had two hits and two runs scored for the Padres.
