Norris hopes to bounce back vs. Yanks
Apr 15, 2015 - 1:56 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Bud Norris has never lost to the New York Yankees and Adam Jones is in the midst of an outstanding power surge. The Baltimore Orioles hope that adds up to a series victory on Wednesday night when they wrap a three-game series with the visiting Yankees.
Jones has gone deep in three straight games and four times over his past five contests, going 11-for-17 at the plate over those five games. He went deep in last night's 4-3 win over the Yankees to back Miguel Gonzalez's excellent outing on the mound.
Gonzalez fanned a career-high 10 batters over seven innings. He limited New York to a run on four hits, slowing down an offense that had plated 20 runs over back-to-back wins.
New York nearly staged a late comeback again, however, scoring twice in the eighth before Zach Britton snuffed the rally with a four-out save.
Caleb Joseph added a pair of hits, including an RBI single, for the Orioles, who had lost four of five coming in.
"I think everything started in the first inning, minimizing the damage and throwing all my pitches for strikes," Gonzalez said. "Keeping them off balance throwing in. And Caleb did a really good job back there."
While Gonzalez was terrific, the Yankees received a second straight solid but unspectacular start out of CC Sabathia. The one-time Cy Young Award winner was reached for four runs and fanned seven over seven innings.
"I feel pretty good," said Sabathia, whose 2014 season was cut short by knee surgery after eight starts. "I'm commanding the ball pretty good, but I just need to tighten up a few things."
Brett Gardner, hit by a pitch from Baltimore's Wei-Yin Chen in Monday's opener, was held out of the Yankees' lineup and is expected to miss Wednesday's game as well.
New York looks to rebound against Norris, who is 4-0 with a 2.74 earned run average in four career starts versus the Yankees.
Norris, though, struggled in his season debut last Friday after winning 15 games and logging a 3.65 ERA in 2014. The veteran righty was rocked for eight runs on seven hits and a walk over three-plus innings of a 12-5 loss to Toronto.
"He made some quality pitches, but he didn't really sequence and wasn't consistent," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter.
Nathan Eovaldi counters for New York and will face Baltimore for the first time.
Eovaldi was in line to lose his Yankees debut on Friday versus the Boston Red Sox after yielding three runs on eight hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings. However, his offense rallied to tie the game before losing in 19 innings.
The Orioles went 13-6 versus the Yankees last season, winning seven of nine at home.
