Padres target third straight win in Colorado
Apr 21, 2015 - 2:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres will try to put together another offensive showcase on Tuesday night when they play the second contest of a four-game series with the Colorado Rockies. The Padres rolled to a second straight win last night with a 14-3 decision over the Rockies. San Diego scored five runs in the first inning while batting around and tacked on another four runs in the second. Every Padres starter had a hit to contribute to the 17-hit attack.
Matt Kemp continued his surge with three hits, four RBI and three runs scored. The first-year Padre is hitting .444 with a homer, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored over his past nine games.
Derek Norris had three hits and scored three runs while plating another for San Diego, which has won five of six and eight of its past 10 games.
Justin Upton returned to the lineup after missing Sunday's game with a strained left quad. He had a hit and then left in the fourth inning with the game turning into a blowout. Will Venable replaced him in left field and added a two-run homer during a five-run fifth inning.
Handed a big lead, Odrisamer Despaigne allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings to earn the win.
"He's got good stuff and keeps hitters off balanced," San Diego's Clint Barmes said.
Jorge De La Rosa, who was activated from the disabled list prior to the game and made his season debut, was rocked for nine runs -- seven earned -- on nine hits and a walk over two frames for Colorado, which has dropped four straight games.
"I was trying to throw as hard as I can but you can't make outs if you don't have command," De La Rosa said.
Charlie Blackmon, Justin Morneau and Rafael Ynoa all drove in a run for Colorado.
Third baseman Nolan Arenado did not play on Monday for the Rockies due to a sore left wrist that has him day-to-day, while left fielder Corey Dickerson exited in the third inning due to a nagging plantar fasciitis issue in his left foot.
Looking to slow down the Padres' offense tonight will be Tyler Matzek, who has given up one earned run in each of his first two starts this season for the Rockies.
The 24-year-old lefty is coming off a win over San Francisco on Wednesday as he scattered five hits and a walk over six innings.
Matzek is 1-3 with a 3.67 earned run average in four starts versus the Padres.
San Diego will start right-hander Brandon Morrow, who has yet to earn a decision over his first two starts despite yielding two runs over 14 innings. He followed up a scoreless outing versus San Francisco on April 10 by yielding a pair of runs and seven hits over seven frames versus Arizona on Wednesday.
Morrow settled down after giving up a two-run homer to the Diamondbacks' Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning and San Diego went on to win 3-2.
Morrow is 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA in two career meetings with the Rockies.
The Rockies were 10-9 versus the Padres last season, winning seven of nine at home.
