Royals come back to beat Twins
Apr 22, 2015 - 4:39 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Moustakas drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.Moustakas also hit a two-run homer, and Alex Gordon added a solo blast for the Royals, who have won three straight games.
"We got a great team and everyone believes in each other," Moustakas said.
Joe Mauer and Kurt Suzuki each had two hits and an RBI for Minnesota, which has dropped three of four.
The Twins went up 5-3 in the sixth with four consecutive two-out, RBI singles by Trevor Plouffe, Oswaldo Arcia, Suzuki and Shane Robinson.
An RBI double by Christian Colon with two outs in the bottom of the inning trimmed Kansas City's deficit to one, and a groundout by Colon brought home pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson with the tying run in the eighth.
After Alcides Escobar popped out in foul territory for the second out, Glen Perkins replaced Casey Fien (0-1) with a runner on third and gave up a single to Moustakas.
"We just couldn't contain them there at the end," said Twins manager Paul Molitor.
Wade Davis tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Chris Young (1-0) picked up the win after tossing two hitless innings in relief.
Kansas City starter Jason Vargas gave up five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Tommy Milone started for Minnesota and allowed four runs on five hits and walked four in 5 2/3 innings.
Gordon gave the Royals a 1-0 lead when he tucked a home run inside the right-field foul pole in the second inning.
Minnesota tied it with three ground-ball singles in the fourth, but Kansas City went up 3-1 on Moustakas' blast to right an inning later.
Game Notes
Royals pitchers Kelvin Herrera and Yordano Ventura were disciplined Tuesday for their roles in on-field incidents during the club's weekend series against the Athletics. Herrera received a five-game suspension, which he is appealing, and an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area of Oakland's Brett Lawrie on Sunday. Ventura received an undisclosed fine for throwing a pitch at Lawrie on Saturday.
