Reds beat Brewers in slugfest
Apr 22, 2015 - 5:33 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Todd Frazier and Jay Bruce smacked grand slams, Zack Cozart homered twice and the Cincinnati Reds outslugged the Milwaukee Brewers 16-10 in the second of a four-game set.Cozart cracked a two-run and a solo blast for the Reds, who have won the first two games of the series on the heels of a 1-7 stretch.
Jason Marquis (1-1) picked up the win despite allowing five runs on nine hits over five innings. He did strike out eight.
"Tonight was just a weird one for me," said Marquis. "At times, I was as crisp as can be, but when I did make mistakes it seemed like they were ready to jump right over it."
Mike Fiers (0-3) surrendered eight runs -- four earned -- on six hits and three walks over four frames for Milwaukee, which has dropped seven consecutive contests.
"For us to score 10 there and not even be close to winning, I don't even know how to explain it," said Fiers. "Things aren't going my way."
Elian Herrera hit a grand slam and Martin Maldonado added a two-run homer in defeat.
The Reds hit their slams in the third and fourth innings to open up a 8-4 lead.
The first one in the third came on a two-out rally. Bruce brought everyone home with his shot to right.
Milwaukee, though, responded with four runs in the home half. Maldonado's two- run blast, Herrera's RBI double and Ryan Braun's run-scoring single tied the game at 4-4.
Frazier launched his towering blast deep into the seats in left-center after Fiers hung a slider on the outside half of the plate.
The Reds added three more runs in the fifth and after Milwaukee pushed across a run in the home half, Cincy put two more runs on the board in the sixth.
A Brayan Pena RBI single preceded Cozart's two-run shot to left in the fifth.
Adam Lind's sacrifice fly in the fifth cut the deficit to 11-5, but Joey Votto's leadoff shot in the sixth and Marlon Byrd's sac fly put the Reds up by eight.
Milwaukee cut the gap to three after putting up five runs in the home sixth. Aramis Ramirez's RBI single and Herrera's grand slam to right trimmed the margin to 13-10.
Cozart's leadoff shot and Brandon Phillips' two-run single in the seventh upped the Reds' count to 16-10.
Game Notes
The Reds haven't hit two grand slams in a game since August of 1999 ... Votto's homer was his sixth of the season ... Cincinnati was 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while Milwaukee finished 4-for-7.
