Yanks seek series win over Orioles

May 9, 2015 - 1:27 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees will clash in the Bronx for the third test of a four-game series Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Wei-Yin Chen hits the mound for the Orioles in search of his first win of the season, while the Yankees counter with Chase Whitley, who has impressed in his two starts this year.

Chen, a 29-year-old lefty, is 0-1 on the season despite five starts for the O's. His only decision came against the Red Sox back on April 20 - a 7-1 Baltimore loss. Chen last hit the hill in a 4-2 come-from-behind win over Tampa Bay on May 3. He lasted six innings and surrendered seven hits and two runs with four strikeouts. His earned run average is hovering around a respectable 2.83.

In 10 career games against New York, Chen has posted a 2-4 record in 57 1/3 innings pitched. He has 45 career strikeouts, 17 walks and a 5.18 ERA against the Yankees.

Whitley's last start for New York yielded a no-decision, but the 25-year-old was still dominant in his seven innings of ball. Whitley hurled seven shutout innings with six K's and as many hits allowed, but the Yankees eventually fell, 3-1, to the Blue Jays.

Whitley has appeared in three games against Baltimore in his career, including one start. He is 0-1 in 5 2/3 innings pitched with a 14.29 ERA.

Last season, Whitley started half of his 24 major league appearances, and finished the 2014 campaign with a 4-3 record and a 5.23 ERA.

The Yankees were able to hold on to a 5-4 victory Friday night in the second game of the series. Alex Rodriguez and Brian McCann drove in runs in the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead, then Carlos Beltran doubled to deep left field in the third to plate two for the 5-0 advantage.

Baltimore scored two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4, but neither team crossed home plate again. Jimmy Paredes drove in two runs in the loss for the Orioles.

"We had plenty of opportunities, we just couldn't get that one blow," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter.

McCann and Beltran each had two RBI for the Yankees. McCann drove in Brett Gardner with a two-run homer in the third - his third home run of the season.

Adam Warren got the start for New York, but it was Dellin Betances who picked up the win - his fourth of the season. Miguel Gonzalez was hit with the loss for the Orioles after surrendering all five runs to the Yankees.

New York was able to even the season series at two games apiece.
