White Sox rally to beat A's
May 16, 2015 - 7:22 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The White Sox took the lead with their bats and won the game with a tag.Adam LaRoche and Avisail Garcia hit two-run doubles during a five-run seventh inning that gave Chicago the lead in a 7-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Friday night that ended in a rundown near home plate.
Stephen Vogt drew a two-out walk off Zach Duke in the bottom of the ninth inning and rounded the bases on Coco Crisp's drive off the left-center field wall, looking to score the tying run.
But Chicago center fielder Adam Eaton played the carom perfectly and got the ball back in quickly to shortstop Alexei Ramirez, whose relay throw was cut off by first baseman Jose Abreu near the pitcher's mound.
Abreu fired to third baseman Gordon Beckham, who chased Vogt down the line, throwing to catcher Geovany Soto for the final tag.
"Spring training at its finest right there," said Eaton. "We actually worked on that. It's nice that actually shows up in the game."
Vogt was caught past the bag after A's third base coach Mike Gallego waved him around, then appeared to put the brakes on at the last second. Gallego hung his head as Vogt was tagged out.
"It looked like he started to send him and tried to hold him up," said A's manager Bob Melvin. "I didn't think he could score there."
The White Sox got their third consecutive win.
Josh Reddick hit a three-run triple and Josh Phegley added a solo homer for the A's, who fell to 1-8 in their last nine.
A's right-hander Jesse Hahn was charged with four runs -- two earned -- in 6 1/3 innings. White Sox lefty Carlos Rodon lasted just four-plus innings in his second career start after giving up five runs on five hits and six walks.
The A's had a 6-2 lead when Hahn was replaced by Fernando Rodriguez with one out in the seventh inning and runners on first and second base. The White Sox turned it into a five-run rally with two outs to go in front.
Melky Cabrera knocked in the first run with a single and Rodriguez was taken out for Fernando Abad after hitting Abreu to load the bases. LaRoche followed with a two-run double off Abad (0-2) and Garcia stroked his two-run double off Evan Scribner to make it 7-6.
Dan Jennings worked around a hit in the bottom of the seventh for Chicago and the A's stranded two more runners in the eighth.
The first four batters of the game reached base against Hahn, who walked LaRoche with the bases loaded to force in a run. Conor Gillaspie added a single in the inning to make it 2-0.
Hahn settled in, retiring the White Sox in order in the next two innings, and the A's took the lead with a four-run fourth.
Phegley led off with his first homer of the season and Rodon walked the bases loaded with one out. Reddick drove all three runners in with a triple to the right-field wall to make it 4-2.
Rodon issued his fifth and sixth walks to start the fifth inning and was taken out for Scott Carroll, who also walked a batter before Eric Sogard delivered an RBI single.
Reddick hit a leadoff double off Carroll (1-1) in the sixth and scored on Billy Butler's single to right for a 6-2 A's lead.
Game Notes
Hahn gave up five hits and two walks and struck out five ... Rodon had five strikeouts. He won his first career start for his first major league victory last Saturday against Cincinnati.
