Alvarez returns from DL to face Braves
May 17, 2015 - 1:57 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Shelby Miller has given up only one run over two starts against the Miami Marlins this season. The right-hander has a chance to help his Atlanta Braves complete another three-game sweep of Miami Sunday afternoon. The last time the Braves visited Marlins Park they came away with a three-game whitewash in the opening three games of the season, outscoring Miami, 16-3. The Marlins took two of three in Atlanta April 13-15, but this weekend the Braves have posted consecutive 5-3 victories.
Miller, for his part, allowed seven hits in 10 innings over his first two starts of the year. He didn't get a decision on April 8, but recorded a win in a five-inning stint on April 13 in Miami.
Henderson Alvarez returns from the disabled list for the Marlins Sunday in an attempt for his first win of the season. The right-hander landed on the DL April 13 with right shoulder inflammation.
Alvarez, who was Miami's Opening Day starter, is 1-3 with a 5.14 ERA in seven career starts against the Braves.
On Saturday, Jace Peterson's first major league home run was a grand slam, and it was the difference for the Braves. In addition to Peterson's big swing, Todd Cunningham and Cameron Maybin provided three hits apiece.
"I'm not a gambler, so I don't know what the odds are on that. We've play well here, it's a good place to play, the guys like the field" Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said about being 5-0 in Miami this year.
Alex Wood (2-2) allowed two runs -- one earned -- in seven innings, and Jason Grilli recorded his 11th save despite allowing the tying run to reach base in the ninth.
Giancarlo Stanton hit his third home run of the series for Miami, but it was not nearly enough to overcome the struggles of Mat Latos (1-4), who allowed five runs in three-plus frames before exiting with a shin injury.
"We were supposed to kick off a good homestand, but we didn't get this series already," Stanton said. "We still have time to make it a good homestand."
Miami has lost five of its last six games. Following Sunday's contest, the Marlins host Arizona for four games and Baltimore for three to conclude the home set.
Miami started the season at just 2-10 against National League East opponents.
