Cubs, D-backs continue desert series
May 23, 2015 - 1:05 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Cubs aim to bounce back Saturday in the second portion of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cubs dropped Friday's opener 5-4 in 13 innings, as Paul Goldschmidt belted the tying two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning and Nick Ahmed's RBI single in the 13th lifted the hosts to victory.
Kris Bryant and Starlin Castro stroked RBI singles in the top of the 10th to give the Cubs a two-run lead, while Zac Rosscup took the loss in relief. Jon Lester started for the Cubs and pitched well, tossing seven innings of two-run ball with four strikeouts and two walks.
"I don't know if pressing is the right word," Lester said. "You come to a new team, new guys, new city, new everything and you want to get off on the right foot. Everybody knows with the contract stuff, I definitely don't want to be one of those guys who at the end of it, you look at it as a bust."
Chicago entered Chase Field with eight wins in 10 tries and will send Jake Arrieta to the mound Saturday. Arrieta is 4-4 with a 2.77 earned run average in eight starts and has lost three of his last four outings, including a 3-0 decision versus Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Arrieta was sharp in seven innings of work, allowing only a run with seven strikeouts and one walk. He has allowed just one run in each of his previous two trips to the mound. Arrieta lost his only career start against the Diamondbacks and surrendered three runs over 6 2/3 innings.
The D-backs have won five in a row following a four-game slide. Goldschmidt and Ahmed were the heroes last night and the latter ended with three hits, including a home run off of Lester.
"I was just trying to get something up in the zone and drive him in," Ahmed said of his game-winning hit. "It got to two strikes and was just trying to make sure that slider was up in the zone because he had bounced one the previous pitch. He left it a little bit over and I was able to hit the ball."
A.J. Pollock recorded four hits and scored twice for Arizona.
Taking the hill for the D-backs Saturday will be Rubby De La Rosa. He is 4-2 with a 4.08 ERA in eight starts and is 2-0 in his past three outings. De La Rosa did not factor in the outcome of a 3-2 win at Miami on Monday, despite lasting nine innings and giving up two runs.
De La Rosa is 3-0 in four home starts and has never faced the Cubs.
The D-backs went 5-2 against the Cubs last season.
