Braves conclude series vs. Brewers
May 24, 2015 - 1:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Braves go for a series win over the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series at Turner Field. The Braves squeezed out a 3-2 win in 11 innings on Saturday, as Jace Peterson drove in Alberto Callaspo with an RBI single. Peterson and Nick Markakis both had two hits for the Braves, who have won six of eight games.
"Probably one of the most fun times I've ever had playing baseball. It was awesome," Peterson said.
Luis Avilan pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief for the win and Shelby Miller gave up two runs in six innings of work. Miller fanned five batters and walked two.
Atlanta is 3 1/2 games off the NL East lead and will head west tonight to start a 10-game road trip against Los Angeles, San Francisco and Arizona.
Taking the mound for the Braves Sunday will be Mike Foltynewicz. He is 2-1 with a 5.32 earned run average in four starts and was dealt the loss in Tuesday's 5-3 decision versus Tampa Bay. Foltynewicz was hammered for a season-high five runs and eight hits in five innings.
Foltynewicz has never faced the Brewers in his short career and is 2-1 in three starts at Turner Field this season.
Milwaukee will try to earn a split of this set in Atlanta and blew a 2-0 lead on Saturday. Cameron Maybin and Freddie Freeman both had RBI doubles in the fifth inning to tie the score and Peterson eventually won it.
Brandon Kintzler took the loss and Brewers starter Mike Fiers was solid in five innings of work, allowing two runs with five K's and a walk.
"I definitely did (give the team a chance to win)," Fiers said. "No one's been hitting that guy (Miller) for a month now, so it was good to get on the board early and pitch with a lead early on. It just helped me a lot knowing I could go right after those guys and make pitches and make them put it in play."
Brewers reliever Will Smith worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings as he awaits an appeal of an eight-game suspension for having a foreign substance on his arm in Thursday's series opener.
Milwaukee, which lost for the seventh time in 11 tries, will start a six-game homestand Monday versus San Francisco and Arizona.
Taking the ball for the Brewers Sunday will be Jimmy Nelson and he is 2-4 with a 3.73 earned run average in eight starts. Nelson was 0-4 in six outings until besting Detroit on the road Tuesday in an 8-1 outburst, as he held the Tigers to a run and three hits through eight innings.
Nelson did walk four batters and struck out five. The right-hander has never faced the Braves and is 1-2 in four road assignments.
The Braves won five of their seven meetings with the Brewers last season, taking three of four at home.
