Red Sox eye second straight ALDS sweep of Angels
Oct 7, 2007 - 1:46 PM Boston at LA Angels 3:07 pm EDT American League Division Series Red Sox lead, 2-0ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- With just one swing, Manny Ramirez placed all the momentum on the side of the Boston Red Sox.
Ramirez and his Red Sox will attempt to sweep the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when the teams meet in Game Three of the best-of-five American League Division Series at Angel Stadium on Sunday.
The 2004 World Series MVP blasted a game-winning, three-run homer off closer Francisco Rodriguez to give Boston a 6-3 victory Friday over the Angels and a two-games-to-none lead.
"One of the best feelings ever," Ramirez said about his huge blast. "I never look for pitches. I always trust myself. In that situation, that guy has got me out so many times. But baseball's like that. Sometimes you get me, sometimes I get you. And I got him at the right time."
It was the ninth postseason walk-off win in Boston franchise history and the first since David Ortiz won Games Four and Five of the 2004 AL Championship Series in extra innings.
Boston has won eight consecutive postseason games against the Angels, beginning in the 1986 ALCS when it came back from a 3-1 deficit. The Red Sox also swept the Angels in the first round of the 2004 playoffs on their way to ending an 86-year championship drought.
In an effort to close out this series, Boston will turn to a pitcher that is used to the big stage in Curt Schilling. The six-time All-Star went 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA during the regular season but has stepped up his game over his career, going 8-2 with a 2.06 ERA in 15 postseason starts.
Schilling is 6-2 with a 3.67 ERA in 12 career appearances - seven starts - against the Angels. His only postseason outing against the Angels came in Game One of the 2004 ALDS, when he allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings in a 9-3 win.
The 40-year-old righthander should be well-rested, as he has not pitched since September 25.
Anaheim will counter with Jered Weaver, who will be making the first postseason start of his career. The righthander, who went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA this season, ended the regular season with wins in five of his last six decisions.
However, Weaver struggled in his two outings against the Red Sox, going 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA.
While the Angels are far from happy with their current situation, Angels manager Mike Scioscia would have Boston fans believe this series is just getting started.
"Naturally, (being down 0-2) is not a desirable position," Scioscia said. "We'll just have to stay focused, inning-to-inning, at-bat to at-bat, pitch to pitch. We'll have to scratch and crawl. We have the type of team that can turn it around in a hurry."
Game Four, if necessary, will be played here on Monday.
