Red Sox and Twins set for doubleheader

Jun 3, 2015 - 11:12 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Fenway Park will be abuzz when the hometown Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins play a day-night doubleheader Wednesday as part of a four-game series.

The twin bill was made possible when Monday's series opener was postponed because of inclement weather.

Boston took Tuesday's first meeting by a 1-0 score thanks to Rusney Castillo's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning and superb pitching by Clay Buchholz, who threw eight shutout innings of three-hit ball with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks.

"An outstanding performance by Clay tonight, and particularly on the heels of him being a little bit under the weather the last couple of days," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He gave us everything he had and a timely, very good performance."

Koji Uehara relived Buchholz in the ninth to post his 11th save.

The Red Sox ended a three-game losing streak and prevailed for just the fourth time in the last 13 games.

Eduardo Rodriguez is slated to start the first game for Boston and the young hurler made his major league debut in Thursday's 5-1 win at Texas, tossing 7 2/3 shutout innings and allowing three hits with seven K's and two walks. The left-hander will get his first taste of the Fenway Park mound.

Rick Porcello gets the nod for Boston in the nightcap and is 4-4 with a 5.37 earned run average in 10 starts. Porcello has lost back-to-back starts after going 3-0 in his previous five outings and gave up six runs in seven innings of a 6-4 loss at Minnesota last Wednesday.

Porcello has given up 13 runs over his current losing streak and the former Detroit Tiger is 8-8 with a 4.10 ERA in 24 career starts against the Twins.

The Twins had won seven of eight games until Tuesday's loss and Mike Pelfrey pitched well in defeat, charged with just one run in seven innings.

"It was well pitched obviously on both sides," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "Buchholz was good. We didn't have many opportunities to get a hit with runners in scoring position and Mike was solid throughout."

Torii Hunter, Joe Mauer and Eddie Rosario provided the hits for Minnesota, which remained a half-game ahead of the Kansas City Royals for first place in the AL Central. Hunter is riding a 10-game hitting streak.

Phil Hughes will start for the Twins this afternoon and has a 4-4 record to go along with a 4.59 earned run average in 10 starts. Hughes lost his first four starts to the season and has rebounded with a 4-0 mark and a 4.74 ERA in his last six appearances. He was reached for four runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-4 win over Boston last Wednesday and held on for the win.

Hughes, a former New York Yankee, is 6-8 with a 5.14 ERA in 25 career meetings (16 starts) with the Red Sox. The righty is 1-3 in five road starts.

Trevor May gets the call for Minnesota this evening and the right-hander owns a 3-3 mark with a 5.07 earned run average in nine starts. May did not record a decision in Friday's 6-4 setback to Toronto and yielded four runs and eight hits in six innings.

May has never faced the Red Sox and is 1-1 in three road outings.

The Twins were held to just two runs over the course of a three-game sweep the last time they visited Fenway in June of last season.
