Miley, Red Sox take down A's
Jun 6, 2015 - 4:44 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Wade Miley pitched into the eighth inning and the Boston Red Sox grabbed a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Friday to open a three-game series.Miley (5-5) allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings for the Red Sox, who had lost five of seven coming in. Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the win.
"Wade was very good," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "A lot of strikes, he attacked the strike zone."
Scott Kazmir (2-4) gave up four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings for the Athletics, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Brett Lawrie was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored.
"I just have to be better out there," said Kazmir. "And I will be next time."
Boston worked across a quick run in the first as Pedroia led off with a single and scored when Holt followed with a double for a 1-0 lead.
The Red Sox made it a 2-0 game in the third when Hanley Ramirez's sacrifice fly plated Rusney Castillo.
In the fourth, Xander Bogaerts led off with a double off the Green Monster and came home when Mookie Betts laid a bunt down the third-base line and Lawrie's off-balance throw to first went wide for a 3-0 lead.
Oakland got a run on the board in the fifth on Mark Canha's RBI single, but Boston answered in the home half as Pedroia led off with a double and scored on Holt's single for a 4-1 advantage.
Lawrie led off the seventh with his fifth home run of the season to cut the deficit to 4-2.
A bit of history happened in the bottom of the seventh, as switch-handed A's reliever Pat Venditte became the first pitcher in 20 years to take the mound and throw with both arms.
He threw with his left arm against Holt and got him to ground out before switching to his right arm for Hanley Ramirez, who stroked a single to left. Still throwing with his right arm, Venditte then got Mike Napoli to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Venditte stayed on and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, including a strikeout of switch-hitter Blake Swihart while throwing with his right hand to end the inning.
Koji Uehara came on in the ninth to close the game and gave up a one-out single to Lawrie before Josh Reddick fouled out. Josh Phegley then belted a double that just missed clearing the Green Monster to put men at second and third. Uehara, though, got Canha to line out to end the game and pick up his 12th save of the season.
Game Notes
Boston police said a woman sitting in the stands on the third base side who was struck in the face by part of a broken bat during the second inning suffered life-threatening injuries, the Boston Globe reported. The woman, who was sitting with her husband and son, according to the paper, was taken to a local hospital ... The last time a pitcher threw with both hands was on Sept. 28, 1995, when Greg Harris did it with the Montreal Expos.
