Cashner toes rubber for Padres in Cincy
Jun 6, 2015 - 1:52 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cashner had one of the oddest starts in his last trip to the mound, but it resulted in a 7-0 loss to the New York Mets Monday at Petco Park. The right-hander gets an opportunity to overcome that defeat Saturday afternoon when he leads the San Diego Padres against the Cincinnati Reds in the middle test of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park.
Cashner gave up 11 hits and struck out 12, both career-highs in the start against the Mets. He lasted 4 2/3 innings and continued his downfall, which has now reached eight defeats. That leads the majors. He's 0-1 with a 3.18 in eight games (2 starts) all-time against the Reds.
Michael Lorenzen makes his sixth career start for the Reds. The righty's last two outings, both starts, have resulted without a decision even though he's given up a combined three hits and three runs in those 13 1/3 innings pitched.
On Friday, Will Middlebrooks hit a solo home run and drove in two as the Padres took a 6-2 victory.
Will Venable and Derek Norris also hit solo homers for the Padres, who have won their last three games. Tyson Ross (3-5) pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts for the win.
Joey Votto hit a two-run single for the Reds, who have dropped three of their last four. Jon Moscot (0-1) gave up four runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five innings to take the loss in his major-league debut.
"I think he rallied really well. I liked his stuff. Just getting him acclimated here, I think he's going to pitch better as we progress," Reds manager Bryan Price said.
The Padres went 5-1 against the Reds last season and the two clubs are scheduled for three games at Petco Park in August.
