Salazar, Indians clip Orioles
Jun 7, 2015 - 2:02 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Salazar had a solid outing as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 in the second of three at Progressive Field.Salazar (6-1) pitched seven-plus innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits and striking out 10 as the Indians evened the series.
"I have my own routine, something that I didn't have in Spring Training. I'm working on my own routine... (and) that's helping me a lot keeping the ball down," Salazar said.
Carlos Santana had the game-winning RBI in the sixth and also scored the other run for Cleveland.
Manny Machado opened the scoring in the third inning with his ninth homer of the season for a 1-0 Baltimore lead.
Cleveland tied the game up in the home third, as O's starter Ubaldo Jimenez had trouble finding the strike zone. Jason Kipnis and Santana each walked to begin the frame, then Michael Brantley lined into a double play before Brandon Moss drew a free pass. Swisher followed with a single to right that plated Santana and tied the game.
Santana poked a two-out double to right in the sixth off Brad Brach (3-2) that plated Kipnis for a 2-1 lead.
Salazar walked Ryan Flaherty to open the eighth which ended his day, then Bryan Shaw came on in relief. After Caleb Joseph sacrificed Flaherty up to second, Machado and Delmon Young each recorded outs to end the inning.
"It's a tough day. Anytime you get a windy, cool weather in a day game," O's manager Buck Showalter said.
Cody Allen struck out two in the ninth for his 13th save. Allen got Matt Wieters to strike out on a pitch in the dirt and catcher Yan Gomes alertly fired to second to get Chris Davis, who walked with one out, to end the game.
Game Notes
The O's had their two-game winning streak halted ... Jimenez, who allowed one run on six hits and six walks over five innings, had allowed 11 runs in his previous two starts against the Tribe ... Salazar has struck out at least five in his last four outings.
