Kluber loses again, as Mariners trip up Tribe

Jun 10, 2015 - 4:20 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Seth Smith provided a valuable insurance run with an eighth-inning RBI single as Seattle clipped Cleveland, 3-2, in the first of three between the teams.

Logan Morrison picked up two hits and knocked in a run for the Mariners, while Robinson Cano doubled twice and drove in the other run.

"Always good to win the first one," said Cano.

Roenis Elias (3-3) allowed a run on five hits over his successful six-inning start. Carson Smith allowed a Yan Gomes homer in the ninth but recovered to earn his second save.

Gomes slugged a pair of solo homers for the Indians, while Corey Kluber (3-7) took the loss despite giving up two runs on seven hits over seven full frames.

"One of those days where I wasn't as sharp as I'd like to be, but I battled through it and put together a decent start," said Kluber.

Dustin Ackley walked against Nick Hagadone to kick off the eighth, went to third as Kyle Seager followed with a double and came home to make it 3-1 on Smith's base hit. Zach McAllister entered and got Mark Trumbo on a liner to second and induced an inning- ending double-play grounder from Brad Miller.

Gomes began the ninth with a shot to center and it was a one-run game again. Following a Brandon Moss groundout, Michael Bourn added a pinch-hit single, but Murphy lined out and Jason Kipnis grounded out to end the threat and the contest.

Cano doubled home Austin Jackson in the opening frame. then Seattle went up 2-0 in the third when Morrison's two-out double plated Miller.

Cleveland picked up its first run in the home half on Gomes' leadoff homer.

Game Notes

Gio Urshela made his major-league debut at third base for the Indians, going 0-for-3 after being promoted from Triple-a Columbus, while infielders Lonnie Chisenhall and Jose Ramirez were sent to Columbus ... Kluber has dropped two straight decisions since picking up his three wins in a four-start span between May 13-28 ... Seager and Smith also finished with two hits for the Mariners.
