Red Sox send Porcello to hill vs. O's

Jun 10, 2015 - 2:28 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox turn to Rick Porcello on Wednesday evening when they try to even their three-game series with the rival Baltimore Orioles.

Though in the midst of a three-start losing streak, Porcello comes into tonight's outing off a solid performance last time out.

Porcello was rocked for a total of 13 runs and 14 hits over 11 1/3 innings in consecutive losses to the Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota, but bounced back in a rematch with the Twins on Wednesday. The right-hander yielded just two runs over eight innings of work, striking out five without giving up a walk. However, he got zero run support in taking a 2-0 loss.

Porcello fell to 4-5 with a 5.01 earned run average this season and is just 3-6 lifetime versus Baltimore with a 5.21 ERA in 11 starts. He is 0-1 in two starts against the Orioles this season, yielding 12 runs and 18 hits over 11 innings with 13 strikeouts.

Wei-Yin Chen tries to post his first victory since May 9 as he gets the start this evening for the Orioles.

Chen has gone 0-3 over his last five starts, but has yielded more than three runs just once in that span. Overall, he is 1-4 on the year with a 3.18 ERA.

The left-hander did not factor into a 3-2 victory in Houston on Thursday, charged with a pair of runs on five hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings. He also struck out nine, a season high.

Chen is 5-4 with a 3.79 ERA in 13 career meetings with the Red Sox, going 0-1 this season in two starts while giving up seven runs over 12 1/3 innings. Five of those runs were unearned.

Baltimore edged Boston 1-0 on Tuesday night to take the opener of this series as Steve Pearce doubled and scored the lone run of the contest on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.

Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes took over for Eduardo Rodriguez and gave up the two-bagger to Pearce, who then moved to third on a single by J.J. Hardy. The hurler then skidded a fastball to the backstop, allowing Pearce to race home.

"It's tough, you want to come in and put up a zero for your team," said Barnes. "It's unfortunate, but back to work tomorrow."

Hardy added a pair of hits for the Orioles, who have won four of their last five.

Chaz Roe fanned two over 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win and Zach Britton recorded the final five outs to notch his 16th save. Starter Miguel Gonzalez left after 4 1/3 innings due to a right groin strain, having allowed four hits and two walks.

"I was ready for any situation. The game in Houston where I did it helped me too," said Britton, who also recorded a five-out save versus the Astros on June 4.

Brock Holt doubled and walked for the Red Sox, who saw their three-game win streak halted and also lost outfielder Hanley Ramirez to a left knee injury during the game.

Ramirez was diagnosed with a contusion after fouling a ball off his knee in the third inning and his status for this game is unknown.

Baltimore owns a slim 5-3 edge in the head-to-head series with Boston so far this season.
