Andrus picks up 4 RBI as Rangers top Twins
Jun 13, 2015 - 4:55 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Elvis Andrus homered and drove in a career-high four runs as the Texas Rangers came back to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-2 in the opener of a three-game set.It was 2-2 at the start of the bottom of the eighth inning, and Minnesota did all it could to keep it that way. But four pitchers in the inning couldn't preserve the tie.
Aaron Thompson (1-2) relieved starter Tommy Milone and walked Leonys Martin, who was replaced on first base after Hanser Alberto's poor sacrifice bunt attempt. Ryan Pressley then came on and yielded a single to Delino DeShields Jr.
With Brian Duensing on the mound, Shin-Soo Choo advanced both runners with a grounder to first, and Prince Fielder was walked intentionally to load the bases. Mitch Moreland then drove one deep to center, and Aaron Hicks had the ball in his glove before it squirted out and rolled to the wall.
"Tough play, but I believe in myself and I make that play all the time," said Hicks. "I just happened to miss it today."
Two runs scored on the error, and Michael Tonkin served up Andrus' two-run single that made it 6-2. Andrus was thrown out at second on the play trying to advance on the throw home.
Wandy Rodriguez was strong on the mound for Texas, allowing a run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. Tanner Scheppers (3-0) picked up the win despite allowing a home run to Brian Dozier in the top of the eighth, and Shawn Tolleson faced the minimum in the ninth.
"(Wandy) was amazing," said Rangers catcher Carlos Corporan. "He was a little bit shaky in the first inning, but after that he was cruising."
Milone struck out eight in seven innings of two-run ball for the Twins, who fell to 3-8 in June.
Minnesota scored in the first inning on a Trevor Plouffe sacrifice fly, then went scoreless until Dozier's homer to lead off the eighth. In between, Andrus smacked a two-run shot to left that gave the Rangers a brief 2-1 lead in the seventh.
Game Notes
The Rangers agreed to terms with their first round draft pick, pitcher Dillon Tate, on Friday ... Twins outfielder Torii Hunter, who started in right field and went 1-for-4, was given a two-game suspension for his actions in a June 10 game against Kansas City ... Both teams had five hits.
