Pirates squeeze past Phillies in extra innings

Jun 13, 2015 - 6:00 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Starling Marte singled in Chris Stewart with the game's only run in the 13th inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 in a battle of struggling offenses at PNC Park.

The Pirates won despite leaving 17 men on base. The Phillies went 0-for-9 with men in scoring position and stranded 13 runners.

Stewart, in a pinch-hitting role, singled to deep shortstop with one out. He went to second on Gregory Polanco's groundout. Marte, who went 3-for-7, then hit a grounder that squeezed between second baseman Andres Blanco and shortstop Freddie Galvis into center field. There was no play at the plate, as the Pirates celebrated and gave manager Clint Hurdle his 900th career victory.

Jeff Locke went the first six innings for the Pirates. Antonio Bastardo (1-1) tossed the top of the 13th for the victory. Josh Harrison had four hits for the Pirates.

Kevin Correia made his Phillies debut and lasted the opening 5 2/3 frames. Dustin McGowan (1-2) suffered the loss, Philadelphia's fourth in a row.

The Pirates loaded the bases in the eighth, but Ken Giles struck out Jordy Mercer to cap the inning.

The Phillies put two men on in the ninth, but pinch-hitter Chase Utley grounded out to extend his slump at the plate to 0-for-22.

In the 10th, the Phillies had runners at the corners with two outs when Jeff Francoeur hit a slow bouncer toward third. Harrison broke in, barehanded the ball and threw to first for the final out.

"As soon as it was hit I saw a good break for it," Harrison said.

The Bucs also failed despite filling the bases in the bottom of the 10th when pinch-hitter Corey Hart struck out facing Jeanmar Gomez.
