Rangers, Twins continue set in Texas
Jun 13, 2015 - 12:52 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Both the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers will look to make a push towards the top of their respective divisions Saturday when they meet for the second time as part of a three-game series at Globe Life Park.Minnesota will turn to starter Mike Pelfrey for the road stint, while the host Rangers counter by sending Colby Lewis to the mound to face the Twins.
Both pitchers enter the Saturday contest with five wins apiece. Pelfrey owns a 5-2 record this season with a 2.28 earned run average and 34 strikeouts. The 31-year-old has pitched very well in his last three outings, but has yet to face Texas this season.
Pelfrey has picked up wins in two of his last three starts, sandwiching a 1-0 loss to Boston earlier this month. The righty is coming off a dominant eight- inning start against Milwaukee Sunday in which he surrendered eight hits and kept the Brewers scoreless. He added seven strikeouts in the win.
In two career starts versus Texas, Pelfrey is 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched.
The veteran Lewis is hoping to improve on a 5-3 record, while at the same time trying to lower a 4.42 ERA. His command is there this season, owning 55 strikeouts compared to only 16 walks in 73 1/3 innings pitched.
Lewis is 2-1 in his last four starts, and is coming off a no-decision Sunday against Kansas City. The right-hander lasted seven innings and gave up eight hits and three runs to the Royals before being pulled.
It's been a tough career for Lewis when facing the Twins. In 11 games and seven starts, Lewis is 0-5 with a lofty 7.28 ERA, a .295 batting average against and a blown save in 38 1/3 innings of work against Minnesota.
A four-run bottom of the eighth inning propelled the Rangers to a 6-2 victory Friday night in the first game of the series. The score was knotted at two apiece before the hosts broke the game open.
It was a stellar showing by Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus, who drove in four runs in the contest and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Two of those runs was thanks to his third home run of the season, which came in the seventh inning.
Wandy Rodriguez got the start for Texas, but it was Tanner Scheppers who picked up the win after making through the eighth by allowing just one run. Scheppers is 3-0 on the season.
Tommy Milone pitched well in his start for Minnesota, but it was Aaron Thompson who was hit with the loss.
The Twins managed just five hits on Friday, while Brian Dozier and Trevor Plouffe providing the only runs in the defeat.
Texas won five of seven meetings between the sides last season.
