Orioles eye series victory over Yankees

Jun 13, 2015 - 2:16 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - American League East rivals collide Saturday in the second contest of a three-game series as the division-leading New York Yankees tangle with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Veteran CC Sabathia gets the starting nod for the Yankees in the contest. He'll go up against Baltimore's Bud Norris, who is looking to tame an out- of-control earned run average.

Sabathia hasn't had the most successful season to date either. The big lefty is just 3-7 on the year with a 5.25 ERA and 64 strikeouts. But he finally put an end to a bit of suffering on Sunday in his last start.

Sabathia was called on to face the Angels at home Sunday, and posted a solid outing of six innings, five hits and two runs to pick up the win - his first since May 16. He also struck out seven batters, which is the most in a single game for him since he fanned nine back on May 11.

In 217 1/3 career innings against the Orioles, Sabathia has allowed 85 runs (82 earned), 200 hits and has struck out 165 Baltimore batters. He's 18-7 against the O's lifetime in 31 starts with a 3.40 ERA.

Norris had a bit of a medical setback recently. The Orioles placed him on the 15-day disabled list after his May 10 start as the right-hander battled a serious case of bronchitis. He was activated for his last start, however, which he made on Sunday. And it was his best outing to date.

Norris went five innings against the Indians and allowed just four hits and a single earned run, all while striking out seven batters, to pick up the victory - his first since April 26. Norris still enters Saturday's clash with just a 2-4 record and a dismal 8.63 ERA.

The 30-year-old's May 10 start came against the Yankees, in which he surrendered four runs on six hits in just 3 1/3 innings before exiting the game.

First baseman Chris Davis had a stellar night Friday as his Orioles pounded the Yankees in the opening contest of the series to the tune of an 11-3 victory.

Davis went 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in four runs, including the first of the contest in the opening inning. He pounded his 13th home run of the season in the third inning - a three-run shot - off Michael Pineda.

Jimmy Paredes and Caleb Joseph each contributed three hits to the winning effort for the O's.

Ubaldo Jimenez picked up the win for Baltimore after going five innings, allowing six hits and three runs. Pineda was hit with the loss for the Yankees, as he lasted just 4 1/3 innings and surrendered nine hits with six runs (five earned).

"He didn't quite have the command he had last time (the Orioles faced him)," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said of Pineda. "Guys put some good swings on mistakes he did make."

Mason Williams drove in two runs for the Yanks, and Alex Rodriguez supplied the other. Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira were the only players for the visitors with multiple hits.

The two teams have split their eight games this season.
