Royals get back in action against Brewers
Jun 15, 2015 - 2:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals will invade Brew City Monday for the first of four straight games against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. The last two matchups will be played at K.C.'s Kauffman Stadium.
Kansas City was hoping to salvage a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, but rain washed away the contest. No makeup date has been announced in the I-70 series.
The Royals have lost two in a row after winning four straight.
Chris Young was slated to pitch Sunday and will move to Tuesday.
"We just wanted to give Chris an extra day to prepare for Milwaukee," Royals manager Ned Yost said.
Edinson Volquez will take the ball for Yost's club on Monday and is 5-4 with a 3.07 earned run average in 12 starts. He has won three of his last four decisions and defeated Minnesota the previous time out on Wednesday, tossing seven innings of one-run ball in a 7-2 verdict.
Volquez has made 17 career starts against the Brewers and is 7-4 with a 4.18 ERA. The Royals are 6-1 in his last seven trips to the mound.
The Brewers split a four-game set with the Washington Nationals this weekend at Miller Park and lost the last two portions, including Sunday's 4-0 decision. The Nationals had a 10-1 advantage in hits and Max Scherzer was brilliant, going the distance with 16 K's and one walk.
Carlos Gomez had the lone hit and Taylor Jungmann pitched well in the loss, charged with a pair of runs in five innings. He fanned five and walked two.
"Every at-bat you stand at the plate, you see him throwing a pitch consistently, throwing the ball where the catcher wanted the ball," Gomez said.
Milwaukee had won six of eight games before this current slide and will send Kyle Lohse to the mound Monday. The veteran right-hander is 3-7 with a 6.27 earned run average in 13 starts and is winless (0-3) in his past five trips to the mound. Lohse pitched well in a 2-0 loss at Pittsburgh on Wednesday and allowed both runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Lohse has given up 21 runs during his winless drought. In 21 career meetings (20 starts) with the Royals, Lohse owns a 6-6 mark to go along with a 3.96 ERA.
The Brewers and Royals are meeting for the first time since Kansas City swept a three-game series in 2012. The Royals have won four in a row against the Brewers.
