Jays go for record 12th straight win

Jun 15, 2015 - 2:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays will try to accomplish a few things they have never done before when they visit the New York Mets on Monday night to open a home-and-home series.

The Blue Jays will host the final two contests of this four-game series, beginning on Wednesday, and come in having won a franchise record-tying 11 straight games. They have plated at least five runs in 10 of those games and scored a total of 31 runs in sweeping a three-game set from the Boston Red Sox over the weekend.

Not only will Toronto be looking to record its first 12-game winning streak, but it also aims for its first win in New York.

The Mets are 15-6 all-time against the Blue Jays, including a perfect 9-0 record as the hosting club. Toronto is visiting New York for the first time since 2001.

The Blue Jays, though, pounded out 16 hits in Sunday's 13-5 win over the Red Sox. Ryan Goins hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs, while Danny Valencia added a two-run shot. Russell Martin went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

"Honestly, I think everybody is coming here every day knowing that we're going to win," Goins told Toronto's website.

Toronto will take its swings tonight against right-hander Noah Syndergaard, who looks to get himself on track in his first career meeting with the Blue Jays, the team that selected him in the first round of the 2010 draft.

The rookie split his first four career starts with a 1.82 earned run average before struggling over back-to-back losses. He struck out 10 in San Diego on June 2, but also yielded seven runs and 10 hits in just four innings of work.

Syndergaard was able to log six innings on Tuesday against San Francisco, but it actually mattered little what he did as Giants starter Chris Heston threw a no-hitter for a 5-0 win. For his part Syndergaard was charged with four runs on 10 hits and a walk, striking out just as his ERA rose to 4.15.

The Mets acquired Syndergaard in a deal that also included starting catcher Travis d'Arnaud from the Blue Jays on Dec. 17, 2012 for starter R.A. Dickey.

"He'll be amped up," Mets manager Terry Collins told MLB.com. "To get to pitch against the organization that drafted you and pretty much groomed you ... That will be fun to see."

Toronto counters with veteran Mark Buehrle, who faces an NL East opponent for a third straight start looking to defeat the Mets for the first time.

Buehrle posted his second straight complete-game victory on June 3 with a win in Washington, then got a no-decision against Miami on Tuesday. The veteran lefty served up a pair of runs, both on solo homers, over six innings against the Marlins. Toronto did record a 4-3 win and Buehrle is 7-4 with a 4.25 ERA on the year.

The 36-year-old is 0-3 lifetime in four career starts against the Mets with a 4.39 ERA.

The Mets put on their own offensive showcase Sunday, rallying back from an early hole to record a 10-8 win over the Atlanta Braves.

New York got home runs from Juan Lagares, Darrell Ceciliani, Dilson Herrera and d'Arnaud to come back from a 5-1 and 8-3 hole.

Dillon Gee returned from the bereavement list and allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings, but New York reeled off nine runs from the third to the sixth inning and the bullpen allowed just three hits after Gee's outing.

"You gotta play nine," Collins said. "You gotta go out and compete... The energy on the bench was great."

New York has won three of its last four games.
