Grand walk-off: Frazier lifts Reds over Tigers
Jun 18, 2015 - 6:32 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Todd Frazier hit two home runs for the second straight night, but none were more dramatic than his walk-off grand slam that ended a 13-inning marathon and gave the Reds an 8-4 win over the Tigers on Wednesday.Frazier knew his shot off Joakim Soria was gone when it left his bat, and when the ball cleared the center-field wall, the Reds mobbed the emerging star at the plate and celebrated back-to-back victories.
"To win it like that was pretty cool," Frazier said. "One I'll never forget for sure."
Frazier also hit a solo homer, while Jay Bruce went 5-for-6 and scored twice for the Reds, whose bullpen allowed just one run on three hits over the final 7 2/3 innings.
Burke Badenhop (1-2) earned the win behind Johnny Cueto, who pitched into the sixth and allowed three runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
Ian Krol (1-1) put the first two hitters on in the 13th prior to Soria serving up the game-winning grand slam.
"It was just a curveball. It was up in the strike zone," Soria said of the two-strike pitch.
Starter David Price only lasted five innings due to a rain delay and was charged with two runs on four hits. Miguel Cabrera's three-run homer highlighted Detroit's offense.
A squeeze bunt from Eugenio Suarez with runners on the corners brought home the Reds' initial run in the home second, then Frazier's blast to right center made it 2-0 in the fourth. Frazier posted his sixth career multi-home run game.
Anthony Gose singled, Ian Kinsler walked and Cabrera cleared the wall in right for a 3-2 Tigers edge in the sixth, just before a deluge interrupted play. Once resumed, Manny Parra set down the next two batters.
In the home half, Bruce singled with one out but was erased when Brayan Pena beat out a potential double-play ball. A Chris Dominguez hit to left scored Pena for a tie game.
Tyler Collins put the visitors back on top with a leadoff pinch homer in the eighth, yet the hosts responded in the bottom half when Bruce doubled with two down and scored as Pena followed with a single to right.
Bruce singled to keep the home 10th alive but was thrown out trying to score on Pena's double down the right-field line on a great relay throw home.
Game Notes
