Phils clip O's, halt lengthy losing streak
Jun 18, 2015 - 11:40 PM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Howard's two-run homer propelled Philadelphia to a 2-1 victory over Baltimore on Thursday in the finale of a four-game, home-and-home interleague series.Ben Revere added two hits and scored a run for the Phillies, who avoided a sweep in the extended set and snapped a nine-game losing streak overall, their longest in almost 16 years.
"We hit a rough patch and we were able to end that today," Howard said.
Jake Diekman (1-1) tossed a scoreless sixth in relief, while Jonathan Papelbon followed suit in the ninth to earn his 13th save. Sean O'Sullivan gave up a run on four hits with seven strikeouts over his five-inning start.
Manny Machado collected a pair of hits including a leadoff home run for the Orioles, who lost for the second time in their last 11 contests.
"We all know they're (Phillies) capable of better baseball and today was a good example of that," O's manager Buck Showalter said.
Bud Norris (2-5) worked six full frames, allowing five hits and a pair of runs.
The Phils didn't get going until the home sixth, as Revere reached on an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored when Howard deposited a ball into the right-field stands.
In the O's seventh, David Lough singled, moved to third when Chase Utley threw the ball into left field on Jimmy Paredes' grounder but was stranded after Machado and Travis Snider fanned swinging.
Ken Giles tossed a scoreless eighth and Papelbon completed the one-run decision by retiring Baltimore in order.
Machado kicked off the contest with a shot into the right-field seats, but O'Sullivan managed to work out of later trouble by striking out Ryan Flaherty with two runners in scoring position.
