Young homers as Yankees edge Astros
Jun 27, 2015 - 5:17 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Young went 3-for-4 with the go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning, as the New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 3-2 on Friday.Young extended his hitting streak to a career high-tying nine games.
"He's been really hot and that's why he's playing every day," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
New York starter Nathan Eovaldi (7-2) gave up two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks over six innings. Dellin Betances recorded the final four outs for his fifth save of the season.
Vincent Velasquez allowed two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings for the Astros.
Velasquez was cruising along until the seventh when he gave up consecutive one-out singles to Carlos Beltran and Garrett Jones. Will Harris (4-1) took over on the mound and Young greeted him with a three-run homer. The Yankees loaded the bases later in the inning, but Mark Teixeira popped out to keep it 3-2.
"He's very result-oriented," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said of Velasquez. "He's really hard on himself. He wants to be perfect. I think there's a deep competitor inside of him that is easy for me to see on the field.
"But I think he's handled a lot of the information that we've thrown at him."
Betances entered the game with a runner on first and two outs in the eighth. Luis Valbuena stole second before Evan Gattis struck out swinging.
The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the third when Hank Conger doubled and raced home on Carlos Correa's single to center.
Houston scored another run in the sixth. Jose Altuve beat out an infield single, stole second and crossed the plate on Gattis' bloop single to center.
