Angels and Mariners get back to work

Jun 27, 2015 - 3:40 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Two American League West rivals battle it out as the L.A. Angels of Anaheim host the Seattle Mariners in the second contest of a three-game series at Angel Stadium Saturday.

J.A. Happ hits the mound for the Mariners in the road start, while the Angels look to get another quality start from Garrett Richards.

Happ enters the weekend sporting a 3-4 record with a 3.78 earned run average, adding in 61 strikeouts to 20 walks in 78 2/3 innings of work.

The 32-year old hasn't picked up a win since May 9, however. He's lost his last three outings, and earned five straight no-decisions before that. Against Houston on Sunday, Happ pitched five innings and allowed seven hits with three runs (two earned) in a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Astros.

In three career starts versus Los Angeles, Happ is 0-3 with a dismal 9.82 ERA in just 11 collective innings pitched.

Although Richards was hit with the loss against Oakland on Sunday, he still delivered a strong outing for the Angels. Richards went eight innings and surrendered three runs on eight hits in the 3-2 loss.

The 27-year-old righty owns a 7-5 record this season with a 3.66 ERA, 62 strikeouts and 32 walks.

In 14 career games and six starts against Seattle, Richards is 3-2 with a 2.45 ERA.

Los Angeles scored early in the first inning Friday night, but no runner for the Angels crossed the plate again as the Mariners came away with a 3-1 victory.

Taijuan Walker pitched an excellent game for the visitors, tossing seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just seven hits. He added six strikeouts to his line, and picked up his sixth victory of the season.

Matt Shoemaker was tagged with the loss for the Angels, even though he only surrendered two runs in six innings of work.

Mike Trout clubbed his 19th home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. He now has 42 RBI on the year. That proved to be the last time the home squad would score a run.

Brad Miller doubled home the tying run in the fifth inning, and Nelson Cruz plated the go-ahead run on a double of his own in the sixth. Robinson Cano sent a solo home run into the right field stands in the eighth for good measure.

The Mariners closed the series gap with the Angels, and head into Saturday trailing by a 4-3 margin this season.
